A few pit stops

CALEB'S P.O.V.

I was glad when we stopped at  a motel for the night. We could've kept going but Zoe insisted on stopping and cleaning up if we were going to meet the spirit. I splashed warm water on my face and looked in the mirror. I was still there, I was present I had a body and I had my memories.

I exited the bathroom once I was free of mud and jumped onto the bed. It was super comfy, it beat the backseat of the car. Jason flicked through channels on the tv with a bored expression on his face. I tilted my head to look at the water damaged spot on the ceiling.

It kind of looked like a heart. My thoughts drifted back to earlier that day, when I let go.. I shuddered and looked at my friends. No way were they going to know what happened, I didn't want them to worry about me. I was strong enough to handle it on my own. They had enough worries as it was.

The main thing was that I was able to bring myself back and that I was strong enough to after I stopped fighting.

I shivered. Enough dwelling on those dark events, I switched my train of thought to something much more pleasant. I was a healer. I finally knew what my supernatural gift was. I didn't even understand how it worked. I was panicking with Anthony being blind and looking like he was in so much pain that something knotted up in my chest and it pulsed and somehow I knew when I put my hand on his arm that the pulsing would go away and it did.

Still, something seemed very wrong with the healer thing. I couldn't put my finger on it. I shrugged and figured it was that I wasn't used to considering myself gifted. I always just thought of the others that way. I snapped out of my thoughts when Anthony swung through the rickety door and the handle broke off. He looke flusteredly at the door handle then shrugged and tossed it aside.

floating around him, was two plastic bags. "Aha!" he  said grinning. A ball of light flew across the room and one of the bags flew into the wall where it stayed stuck by an arrow. Jason popped up. "What are those? You didn't buy drugs did you?"

Anthony backed up with his hands up. "Chill dude, I got food! Much better than the stuff we lifted from the convenience store. I used my abilities this time which is a lot harder to do stealthily considering I can only barely do it without moving my arms yet."

The arrow dissolved and the bag dropped; a moldy bagel rolled out. "Uh..." Zoe said looking at the bagel. "Where did you get the food?" Anthony blushed. "I lifted it from the free continental breakfast thing. I created a diversion by chatting with the person at the desk using many hand gestures."

I picked up one of the bags and rifled through it. Rotten fruit and stale bread were the only thing that was in there. "I don't know what your definition of better is, but its not this" I said. "If we're going to get better food, you're going to need me or..." I forgot who the girl was. Her name completely slipped my mind for a moment. "Zoe, no offense to your shoplifting skills man."

He shrugged. "None taken, you two pulled off getting this room very nicely." I turned to Zoe. "I'm going to snag some actual food, you want to come?" She shook her head. "I can't, I think I'd be pushing myself too far if I did. The only way I won't have any aftermath is if it's in a high emotion situation and we haven't been in one of those for a while."

I nodded. "I understand. So what do you guys want?" Jason got up. "Well any food's good for me. I'm coming with you man. We haven't had time to chill since we left to find this girl and I miss your lack of knowledge about the world."

I snorted. "Ha, alright then, we'll see you two when we get back. Let's go through this magical portal Jason." He laughed and picked up the door handle  and stuck it back to the door. In a few moments it was as good as new.

Was I ever wrong when I thought magic was just card tricks. We climbed down the stairs and into the breezy summer evening.

----------------------------------------

The next day we got up really early and headed out. It was really exciting knowing that I was going to see her that day. The girl without a name. I sighed and pressed head against the glass of the window smiling, the wait was agonizing yet it gave me hope.

I was going to get my memory back. That, I knew for sure. We passed through town after town until we reached a small place with a glowing university campus. Students milled about and a gentle breeze rippled through the air.

Zoe and I were perched on the trunk of the car eating some beef jerky while Jason dug around the trunk for oil. Anthony was practicing moving stuff without his hands with no luck. I tipped my head back and drank in the sunlight. Everything seemed so quiet and simple here, the tall oak trees cast shade on the ground and everything seemed quiet and peaceful.

I hoped to have days like this once I remembered. Days that were calm and uneventful, ones where you could just do something normal. The world spun for a moment and the bag of beef jerkey dropped out of my hand. I frowned and bent to pick it up, my hand went straight through.

Cold fear spread through my body like it was in my veins. Zoe looked at me for a moment with questioning eyes. "I had that weird falling feeling." I laughed. She nodded smiling, "Oh yeah I hate that! When you're relaxed it just hits you." She totally bought it.

I nodded smiling and looked at my hand. It was transparent like a ghost's. I concentrated on picking up the package and managed to hold it long enough to get it onto the car without..... them noticing. I had a blank space in my memory where the names of my friends were.

It was like when you lose a tooth and you cant stop putting your tongue in the place it used to be. I didn't even remember what just happened so I tried to hop back up onto the trunk of the car but I was surprised when my arms went through the... shiny metal thing.

The memory laspes were getting worse. "Caleb!" the girl with the straight black hair exclaimed. I looked up at her and back at my arms which were still sunk into the thing. "I don't know..what's happening?" Words felt strange in my mouth, I had to really think before I could use them.

the girl blinked. "I can hardly see you!" I pulled my arms out of the thing and the world sharpened. I felt strong. I was concerned but I couldn't put that on my friends...no I needed to deal with this alone, they had enough to worry about already.

I pulled myself back onto the trunk and looked at Zoe forcing myself to feel calm so she wouldn't feel my true concern. "Sorry, about that. That happens sometimes if I don't pay attention." I said taking a bite of jerky. her eyebrows creased.

"Are you sure? That was scary!" I nodded slightly. Anthony rushed over to us, his eyes glittered. "Guys! I think I did it!" He pointed to a kid reading on a bench. "Watch this." He stared at her and his forehead wrinkled with concentration. The page lifted slightly and then drooped back down.

"Ugh!" he exclaimed in frustration. "Guys!?" Jason's voice came from behind us. We looked back and his eyes were glowing, he was holding a ball of fire in his hand. "We gotta get out of here those lizard things found us."

On the horizon there was a seething herd of them barreling down on us. We jumped in the car and sped off.
