(No, not the vibes. But Nico stuck in a tree. Upside down, unconscious as tourists take photos. Y'all wanted a backstory so...)
Yoki had seen it all happen from the roof of her thatched hut. It was such a simple dwelling, (even though her parents could easily afford more) and it fit the tourist vibes of the small island. But Yoki could have cared less about the ants taking a trip over her legs whenever she saw a big black bird carrying a wiggling boy. She stood, disrupting the big black ants marching in a line over the roof, onto her leg and off again, and began to yell. Waving her arms and jumping up and down. The big bird...lady thing turned towards her voice and screeched at her. She screeched back and it let go of the boy who vanished from her sight and tried to dive bomb her. Yoki jumped one last time, then jumped off the room into the bed of her dads truck.
Yoki looked up and ducked just in time for the creature to ram into the side of her house. She winced in sympathy, then grabbed a fishing spear she'd almost landed on and flung it at the lady. She exploded into golden dust and Yoki tried to smooth away the coils of hair that had escaped her puff before looking for the boy.
It didn't take long, there was a crowd gathered three huts down around a palm tree, taking photos of the boy who was hanging upside down. Saying something about a monkey? The boy didn't look like a monkey! Yoki waved them away, saying it had rabies or something and soon the crowd was gone.
"Emo boy!" She yelled up, cupping her hands, "wake up!"
He didn't mean over, typical. So kicking off her flip flops she began to climb the palm tree, scurrying up and bitting at her lip. The boy's ankle was wedged in pretty good and she's don't s see how it was possible that he'd fallen here from where the creatures had dropped him. But who wants as she to judge. "Hey! Boy!" She slapped him.
That woke him up and the pale olive skinned boy swatted in her direction and yelled something in another language. "Ay! Stuff it I saved your behind. Now wiggle out or i'll get my dad's machete."
The boy looked at her, then he vanished like smoke and appeared on the ground below. Falling over on his behind. Yoki shimmed down, jumping the last few feet. "Teleportin' Emo boy."
"Nico."
"Yoki,"
They stare down for a bit and Yoki offered the boy a hand, "want something to eat?"
"Uh, sure?"
And soon Yoki was roasting some Dolphin (not actual dolphin, it's a type of fish. Deep breath people. Just google it.) for him.

"I think i'll stick here. Ain't never getting on the back of that ting. it's gonna teleport right from under ya." Yoki waved a stick towards the huge black 'hellhound' that Nico promised was friendly and who's name was Mrs. Ole Leary. He made sure to mention that but he could not convince the dark lipped girl to come with them. She was probably a demigod, Nico even wondered if maybe a daughter of Apollo by the way the sun shone off her skin and she's exuded health. But he hadn't had a ton of experience with people with darker skin before, just Hazel, so maybe it was normal. He waved goodbye and they shadow traveled away. He hadn't left her entirely stranded, he'd told her about camp and given her a couple of dramas to iris message (after explaining what that was.) if she ever wanted to come. But she seemed pretty content living with her father, her Nana and little brother. She had good aim with her fishing spear and she'd shown him the only scar she'd ever gotten from a monster. A tiny one, one that Nico would have brushed off as scraped knee, but it had apparently come from a really big, smelly, crab.
Oh but then Nico was involved In all... this big mess. With someone stabbing Percy where his achelliez heel used to be, and Rachel missing and Chiron saying solemnly the that he trusted Nico to find her. How was he supposed to find her!? Especially now that Mrs. Ole Leary was very slowly making her way back over to where Nico was and the mist was gone and! And! Apollo was the god of prophecy why couldn't he just snap his fingers and know where his Oracle was? Nico leaned back, closing his eyes with a groan. The gods had weird and arbitrary rules about who could mess with what in 'mortal affairs.' But... their kids didn't. Most of Apollo's kids weren't good at predicting the future, weirdly enough Percy's dreams were better at that. But Yoki had mentioned that Mrs. Ole Leary was going to teleport from under him and that could have been her being dramatic but it had happened pretty soon afterwords...
Nico tossed a golden coin in the air weighing the options. Yoki had no way of getting off the island except by boat, private plane or Nico and Mrs. Ole Leary teleporting which she'd been adamant about not doing. Maybe he could just ask if she had any dreams, then she wouldn't have to leave at all.
