When Grover finally woke up Percy was still there, by there I mean sitting in Grover's mind. It was kinda strange, very strange in fact because Percy could see everything Grover could see. It was like he was a passenger and Grover was the driver and didn't know he was there. Could Percy talk to him?
"Hey G'man can you hear me?"
Grover visibly startled. "Percy?"
"Ayyy, I'm just like in your head still."
"It sounds like you're talking right behind me," Grover explained as he spun in a circle.
"But I'm in your head!" Percy threw up his hands excitedly and Grover snorted.
"I—so you're not in your body. Can you?"
Percy couldn't really look around, he was just looking through Grover's eyes. There was t anywhere else he could look. He couldn't make Grover look anywhere. "Uh I'm just kinda here."
He honestly couldn't really feel—no, there it was. The faintest uncomfortable pinch in the small of his back. He definitely got rid of that in the river—what was going on? He felt like he'd skipped several important chapters in a book. He remembered everything up until chugging the vial from the gorgons after playing a dangerous game of chance. Then it was blank. It was like that was all the memories 'Hera' had to offer because it was all she'd taken.
"Percy?"
"Sorry got distracted, I can't remember how... what was your question?"
"Can you feel your body? Can you go back?" Grover had moved over to the mirror. It was weird staring at Grover from Grover's own eyes.
"I'd rather not it feels like I'm holding up the sky when I'm there."
"Kronos is controlling it, but maybe with your memories you'll be strong enough to fight?"
An unease instantly hit his stomach, he knew Grover could feel it because his face dropped. "Let's just go see Annabeth. She's been strategizing non stop."
Sure enough Annabeth was bent over a table with a magical sharpie in hand that erased when she willed it to, she hardly noticed Grover walking in. Percy felt instant relief seeing her, he could feel his whole body relax from somewhere far away and for a second he saw a flash of a cave in front of him. Rachel bound and blindfolded in the middle. Then he was back as his body tensed again.
"Oh crap."
"What is it?" Grover asked and Annabeth looked up.
"You're awake." She said monotone and then shook herself a little, "you're awake!"
"Yeah, Percy's tagged along," Grover pointed at his head, "as in he's actually just in my head. Not in his."
Annabeth's eyebrows fell slightly as she looked skeptical and calculating. "How."
"I don't know," Percy replied forgetting Annabeth couldn't hear hint
"He says he doesn't know, but I think somehow he's been pushed back so much by Kronos that he's actually just more conscious in my mind." Grover explained best he could. Trying to find an explanation for something that didn't have much of one.
Annabeth covered her face with her hands, Percy's heart ached painfully because he just wanted to hug her. The emotion gave him another glimpse of lifting of Rachel's bleeding chin as she glared angrily at him. One eye green, and one eye brown. and then he was back.
"Grover, Kronos has Rachel and she doesn't look like she's in great shape. Also she's got one brown eye and one green one."
"Percy says he saw Rachel and she's got one brown eye and one green eye. As in He's with her right now. Right?" Grover asked for confirmation and Percy gave a mental thumbs up which apparently Grover knew. "Right."
"Okay, okay great. Lovely. Nico is already tracking her." Annabeth let out a shallow breath.
"You guys have to kill me." Percy suddenly realized. "He's in my body, there's no way to get him out."
Grover shifted uncomfortably and Annabeth raised an eyebrow. "What did he say?"
"Tell her."
"Just nonsense." Grover waved it off.
"You're lying" both Annabeth and Percy said at the same time.
"He says we have to kill him."
"No!" Annabeth yelled and a small head popped into the room at the sound and she looked back and kept aggressively drawing. Another flash, Rachel looking determined but only from her eyes. Percy could almost feel her intent, his back burning from it. She knew his spot, Rachel had confided in him she'd seen it in a dream once. He only hoped Kronos didn't know that, hoped he didn't see her.
"Percy?" Grover asked and Percy snapped back from the flash. This was weird. He felt pulled in two directions but pushed away by Kronos at the same time. He was going to die wasn't he?
"Hero's don't get to live happily ever after." He found himself whispering and Grover whined a little. "Rachel's gonna try."
"What! She's going to stab you? Does she even know the spot?!?" Grover demanded and Annabeth jerked upright again.
"Who!?" Annabeth demanded.
"She knows the spot." Percy said. "You need to cut off the empathy link. I don't want you to die."
"I can't cut it off unless we're face to face." Grover scolded turning away from Annabeth and looking at his own hands. "And we don't know that I'll die."
"Grover you tell Percy he can't let Rachel kill him. He can't die we'll figure out a way." Annabeth demanded. "Percy you can't!"
"If she doesn't he'll burn my soul up anyway! Then what? He'll be powerful enough to make his own body and he won't need mine anymore." Percy fought back but it fell on deaf ears because Grover didn't repeat it.
"He's asleep now," Grover lied, "or ignoring us." He was siding with Percy. Because even if there was another way if Annabeth had hundreads of years, or even a month more time, they didn't have either.
"He can't die," Annabeth's voice broke, "He can't."
We'll meet again, he thought quietly, but it will be in the underworld.
