You slouched at a library table, surrounded by books you had no intention of reading. You grabbed your math textbook, took one look at the formulas, and immediately slammed it shut. "Not today," you muttered, shoving it aside in favor of your English book.

After a few minutes of half-hearted skimming, you leaned back with a sigh. "Yep, I've definitely studied enough."

You pulled out your phone, ready to scroll through memes until your brain melted, until your phone rang. It was Mira.

"Hey, what's up?" you whispered, glancing around to make sure the other students wouldn't be bothered by you.

"Turn around," Mira giggled on the other end.

You spun around and spotted her just a few feet away, grinning at you. You hung up, and she slid into the seat next to you.

"What are you doing here?" Mira asked.

"Studying," you said, gesturing at your impressive pile of unopened books. "What about you?"

"I'm with Zack, but the coed study room was full, so we had to split up," Mira said, rolling her eyes.

"Poor Zack," you chuckled. "You wanna get some snacks? My brain needs fuel if it's going to pretend to study for another ten minutes."

"Sure, let me just message Zack," Mira said, already typing.

A few minutes later, Zack showed up, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else. His gaze met yours for a brief moment before it turned suspicious. "What are you doing here?" he grumbled.

"I was being a good student," you said, flashing him a cheeky smile. "Which is more than I can say for some people."

Zack rolled his eyes. "Good student? You didn't even show up to school today."

You shrugged. "At least I'm not dead last in our class."

Zack shot you a look that could melt glass. "You're so annoying."

"I try," you teased, grinning at him, feeling a strange sense of satisfaction when you caught the slightest twitch at the corner of his lips before he turned away.

Mira sighed and gave both of you a stern look. "Can you guys not bicker for five minutes?"

The three of you headed to the snack bar, grabbing food and sitting down. Zack stayed quiet at first, but you couldn't help but notice the way his usual tough-guy expression softened slightly when Mira laughed. It was subtle, but you saw it. In return, Zack kept sneaking glances at you too, almost as if he was checking to see if you had noticed.

You caught him looking again, but instead of calling him out, you gave him a smug grin. Zack kicked you under the table. You naturally kicked him back, twice as hard. He yelped and shot up from his seat, causing Mira to look alarmed.

"Zack, are you okay?" she asked, concerned.

Zack muttered something about needing fresh air and stormed outside, leaving you laughing.

"You really think he'll keep that promise?" you asked, referring to Zack's supposed vow to avoid fighting. Mira nodded confidently.

"He has to. I'll be mad if he doesn't."

You raised an eyebrow. "You really think that is going to stop him?"

You both looked out of the window at the same time, to notice Zack was giving out directions to an elderly woman, with his cigarette behind his back so that the smoke wouldn't reach her. You were surprised to see that Zack had manners, and Mira also noticed how you looked at him.
