Boy

. . .

AJ boredly sat next to Lucas on one of the benches in the hallway, just outside of their classroom. He was forced to be quiet as his new friend(-ish) paid him no mind, opting to tap away on his phone.

"Who're you texting?"

"No one." the southern boy replied hesitantly, choosing to look AJ in the eyes.

AJ stared back at him, not an ounce of amusement in his eyes, "Don't tell me you're texting that smiley girl."

Lucas sighed, "Fine, yes. I'm texting Riley."

"You do realize that she's standing, like, five feet away from you right? And since when could you have a conversation with Riley, without being creeped out?"

"Oh, leave me alone. I'm just trying to be nice."

"Whatever dork." AJ lightly chuckled, hopping up from his spot and heading into the classroom- ruffling Lucas' hair in the process.

. . .

"You guys don't connect with each other. It's like you can't exist without these." Matthews held up his phone, "You use emoticons rather than emotions. You're an unfeeling generation of zombies."

AJ rolled his eyes, already turned off from the lecture. He saw no point in listening to the older man practically scold them about phones, seeing as he doesn't even own one. The closest thing he had to a phone was the old landline in their apartment that the landlord apparently never bothered to take out. They rarely used it, and they never answered any call that came on it- the only people who ever called that phone were telemarketers or parole officers (his own as well as some of his cousins).

"Stop eating her!" Matthews' voice pulled AJ out of his thoughts as he shouted at Riley and Maya, of whom were leaned towards each other and were pretending to eat the other.

"You're late, Miss Myzell." Matthews says as one of his students quietly walked into the classroom, shutting the door behind her.

"My goldfish died." the girl bluntly replied.

"You, see? This is what I'm talking about." Matthews wraps one of his arms around the girl's shoulders. "Miss Myzell, has clearly suffered a tragic loss. Yet, she does not seem in touch with her actual emotions."

"'Scuze me? I am crying my eyes out. I'm gonna have to leave class early." She stated with a straight face, before walking back out of the classroom.

"Oh, she actually made it out the door this time." Matthews said, nearly impressed, reopening the door to reveal the girl standing behind it.

"I actually made it out of the door this time." She smiled, taking her seat while Matthews closed the door once more.

"Dad, adjust and deal. Cellphones have been around for, like, ever." Riley grins.
