Smackle
. . .
"Ancient Greece-" Mr. Matthews began his lecture, only to be cut off by his daughter.
"What that? What that that?" Riley pointed to the gift in his hands, reminding AJ of when his siblings were learning to talk.
"What thi-this?" Matthews gestured to the gift wrapped box, "This is a present."
"Is it for me?"
Maya furrowed her brows, "What's your game, Matthews?"
"Game? I mean no game. I just want to know who here wants this present."
Everyone, except for Maya and AJ, raised their hands.
"Oh, Maya, AJ, what? You assume by playing hard to get, I'm gonna give it to you?
The blue-eyed boy laid back in his seat, shrugging. "No one ever gives things away without a catch or some kind of transaction, so no thank you."
The blonde on the other hand, nonchalantly waved her hand. "Well, yes, that's one of many arrows in my quiver."
Farkle loudly shuttered, causing everyone to look at him. "Medieval talk- what are you doing to me woman?"
The Toriello boy leaned over and patted the scrawny boy's shoulder, "Calm down there bud."
Ignoring the interaction, the teacher placed the gift onto AJ's desk. "Mr. Toriello."
The brown-haired boy cocked an eyebrow, staring the teacher down, before leaning forward to hand the present to Riley. The whole ordeal of receiving a gift, no strings attached, didn't sit right with him - plus the brunette seemed excited about it.
"Yay!" the brunette excitedly opened the box and pulled out a little chalkboard with the words 'the Trojan horse' scribbled on it. "The Trojan horse?"
"Surprise," Matthews grinned.
"This isn't a present," she waved her hand over the chalkboard, "this is one of your life lessons, wrapped up in a class lesson, wrapped up in a box of nothing."
"How you doin' honey?" Maya cautiously asked, practically seeing smoke come out of the smiley girl's ears.
"I'm all worked up."
"I know."
"You assumed because it was all neat and pretty, something good was inside." the teacher stated, "Ancient Troy was protected by walls. The Greeks couldn't get in, so they built a big wooden horse and left it behind. What do you think the Trojans did?"
"They left it there, because they were afraid somebody was trying to teach them something." Riley glared up at her father.
The blue-eyed shook his head, "They thought it was a gift, Riley. They believed it was the Greeks' way of trying to make peace, so they brought it into their home. That night, the Greek soldiers climbed out of the horse and slaughtered everyone. They defeated Troy, they won the war."
