The next day I get ready. Today is the day of the ball. Only Genya seems excited, blabbering away while she works. I welcome the distraction. Once Genya's done my dress comes. It is all black, except for the edges which are gold. Once again the darkling's symbol, the sun in eclipse, is over my heart. Then Genya does my makeup. Once she is done I barely recognize myself in the mirror. Once Genya leaves the darkling comes to see me. He is dressed in a black kefta, with silver embroidery. "Are you ready?" he asks. "No." I say, my voice quivering," But I don't have a choice do I?" His face quirks into an amused expression. "No, you don't."
We walk to the ball together, and when we arrive I see that everyone has been waiting for us. I let go of the darkling's arm and run towards Genya. As the music starts Genya goes to find David and I am left to watch the darkling greet everyone. He sees me watching him and makes his way over to me. "When is the demonstration?" I ask. "Soon" he replies vaguely. A minute later the music stops and the demonstrations begin. First, the Corpoalki go, then the Materialki. The etherealki.
Finally, it's our turn. The darkling leads me to the stage and the ballroom is completely quiet. First, he sends spirals of darkness out, making it impossible to see. Then I send shoots of light out making patterns of spirals and lines. Then I make my light so bright it chases the darkness away. We entwine the light and the darkness, making a beautiful display of light and darkness. For our final demonstration, we send shoots of light and darkness, shooting over the crowd like fireworks. As we leave the stage everyone claps. Once we're off, the music starts again and everyone starts dancing. I race away to find Genya. I see she is over chatting with David and Zoya. Once the ball is over, I Practically fall into bed, exhausted.
