"Newt, come on! Wake up!" I said excitedly shaking Newt's shoulders.
"Alright," he groaned, "I'm up,"
The sun was just rising as I woke Newt up from his hammock. I stood back and he sat up scratching his head and yawning.
"You didn't wake up for awhile. I thought you had a schedule now to wake up at this time," I chuckled.
He sighed and looked up at me, "I was tired from the work yesterday,"
I was now 16 years old. I had been in the Glade for three years. My best friends were Newt and Minho, and Alby was like a brother to me just as Newt is. I enjoyed my time in the Glade, but I had to run through the Maze this morning with Ben.
"Hey, Y/n," I heard a voice from behind me.
"Oh hey Ben," I turned to see Ben ready to go out.
"You ready yet?" he asked.
"Yeah," I smiled, "Come on Newt,"
Newt stood up and laid his arm around my shoulders as we walked to the entrance to the maze with Ben. We stood there in the grass as we said our goodbyes.
"Alright, don't get yourself hurt now," Newt smiled turning to me.
"I won't," I chuckled.
He smiled and took his arm off my shoulders. I gave him a quick and warm hug, and then ran into the maze with Ben. We got pretty far, but as we were running, my leg suddenly gave out and I fell in pain. Ben turned back to me and kneeled as I sat up holding my calf.
"Hey, you alright?" he asked.
"Yeah, just help me up," I said.
He took my hand and tried pulling me up but I couldn't stand on my left leg. I had gotten a Charley Horse.
"I'm gonna take you back and ask Minho to take your place, okay?" Ben said helping me up again.
"Alright, thanks,"
I put my arm around his shoulders and his linked around my waist pulling me. We walked out of there and Newt immediately ran up. The sun was a bit higher now; it slightly lit up the Glade's trees.
"Is she alright?" he asked as I moved away from Ben and leaned on Newt.
"Yeah, she just got a muscle spasm. I'll take Minho out instead," Ben responded.
Newt nodded and proceeded to help me walk to the med-jacks Clint and Jeff. We walked into the tiny hut, and I sat on a cot.
Jeff came over and observed my leg seeing nothing wrong.
"What's the issue?" he asked.
"My leg cramped up," I responded.
"Oh, okay. Just lay down, it should go away soon," Jeff said.
"Alright, I'm off. I'll check up on you in a bit," Newt said.
"It's not that serious though," I chuckled.
"I know. I just thought that I'd keep you company. Reckon my company is better than Jeff's," Newt laughed.
Jeff smirked and wandered off. I laid in the cot alone after Newt and Jeff left. I closed my eyes and rested for awhile until I heard gears turn and rust screech. The box was coming up again. I opened my eyes and stood from the cot feeling little pain in my leg. I left the med-jack's hut and walked over seeing all the boys run to the cage. I pushed my way through them seeing a boy about my age sit there holding his arm up to his eyes shielding the sun. He had dark brown hair and brown eyes. His skin was pale, and he arrived soaked in water like the rest of us. I furrowed my eyebrows observing him, and Gally hopped down the cage to open it. The boys chuckled at the new boy's fear as Gally opened the cage. Gally hopped down and squatted in front of the boy.
"Day one, greenie," he said, "Rise and shine,"
He roughly pulled the boy out and threw him down onto the fresh grass. Everyone stood around him including me and wondered what he'd do next. I thought it cruel to throw him out like that, but Gally is just an ass. All the boys began laughing and teasing him. Apparently, he had had enough of it and pushed everyone out the way. He began to make a run for it and I'll admit, he was fast. He ran a bit far until he stopped and face planted into the ground. Everyone began laughing at him for his fall, but he looked and stood to see what was around him. The four magnificent walls stared him down as the sun shone on the vines. And I could tell he was terrified.
He looked all around him until Gally and his friends walked up to him and pulled him away. They threw him into the pit and locked the bamboo door. I sighed.
"Why are they so mean to him?" I asked Newt.
"We're boys. We like it," he chuckled.
I punched his arm and he laughed. He walked off to continue farming and I stood observing the pit. I saw Alby begin to walk over to the pit, but I stopped him wanting to see the boy for myself.
"Hey, is it okay if I see him actually?" I asked Alby.
"Sure," he nodded.
He walked away and I limped my way to the pit. I saw his hands wrap around the bamboo as he observed the Glade. It was quite quiet, and very peaceful. I stepped in front of the pit nearly scaring him to death. He fell back breathing quickly and stared me down in fear.
"Hey there," I said crouching in front of the door, "You okay?"
He slightly nodded but was still fearful.
"You probably shouldn't run like that again, or you'll be thrown back in here," I smirked.
He didn't say anything, but only nodded again.
"Alright," I mumbled awkwardly.
I unlocked the door and pulled it away. I got closer in and watched his face closely. I smiled a bit to make him less nervous which seemed to work.
"My name is Y/n. Do you remember anything? Could you tell me about yourself?" I asked, "Like who you are? Where you came from?"
"No," he whispered as he sat and rested his arms on his knees.
"Can you tell me your name?" I asked quietly.
He then got worried and dropped his head fiddling with his hands.
"I, uh, I can't remember anything," he said looking up at me and breathing heavily, "Why can't I remember anything?"
He began to panic in fear.
"It's okay, it's okay," I assured, "Just relax,"
My voice seemed to have reassured him. He looked back up at me and calmed his breathing.
"It's normal to not remember anything here. It happens to us all. You'll get your name back in like a day or two. Y'know... it's the one thing they let us keep," I responded.
"What is this place?" he asked looking into my eyes.
