"Good job. You just killed yourself," I remarked.
He stared at me for a moment, "What?"
I sighed from exhaustion and laid back onto the stone ground. I panted as Thomas stood up and walked over to observe Alby and his injury.
"What happened to him?" he asked as he knelt down beside Alby.
I moved my head over and said, "He got stung. We were attacked by a griever,"
Thomas looked back to me and I sat up resting my elbows on my tired knees.
"Are you alright?" he asked worried.
"I'm fine. Just tired," I exhaled.
I appreciated his concern for me until I heard a distant roar. The sound of gears turning was frightening, but the fear of knowing we'll die tonight was immeasurable. His attention was turned to the roar as was mine, but we couldn't do anything. At least, nothing that I know of.
As I sat there watching him I thought of Newt and Chuck and everyone else. Newt must be worried sick about me and Thomas right now. He's probably pacing back and forth hoping I come back. My attention was pulled away from my thoughts as I heard Thomas grabbing onto Alby's arm and pulling him up.
"Okay... okay. Help me get him up," he said with a shaky voice.
"It's useless and the maze is already changing, Thomas," I said standing up.
"Y/n," he spoke, "We can't just leave him here,"
His brown puppy eyes looked into mine and I knew he was right. I was just scared. I bent down beside Alby and we both picked him up. We swung his arms over our shoulders and began to walk down the long corridors of the maze. His feet dragged behind us which slowed us down so we chose to hold his legs up too. One hand would hold Alby's arm and the other would loop around his leg and hold him up. It was a bit difficult to carry him along with Thomas, but we soon got used to it.
As the sun began to set our fear began to rise. We had been walking for a half an hour and were exhausted. I turned the corner and we came upon another long corridor. I looked around thinking of where to go, but I couldn't think straight at the time. I was focusing on the physical strain as we carried him.
"Let's sit him down. Sit him down," I said.
Thomas listened and we both grunted as we set Alby down to lean against a cold stone wall. Thomas sat next to him tired and I stayed standing observing what was around us and figuring out the right way.
There was a distant screeching and it echoed painfully. My heart began to race a little faster as I tried to think of how to get away from there. The griever was around a few corners once I realized it was getting closer.
"We gotta keep moving," I hastily spoke, "We gotta go,"
"Wait, what are you talking about? We gotta hide him," Thomas said.
I looked back down to him, "Where?"
"I don't know," he responded, "Is there not a single place we could take him?"
I knelt in front of him and grabbed his shoulder harshly.
"Have you seen this place? There's nowhere to go," I began to freak out.
The trauma from the last attack was catching up to me in that moment. It made me dig my nails into his shoulder. Once I noticed, I let go. I backed away and stood up trying to calm myself.
"You don't get it. We're already dead," I said.
I saw him watch my eyes steadily until his gaze was averted somewhere else. He stood up and walked behind me to see a tall wall covered entirely in vine.
