the three girls, plus anya, stood under the shade of a tree, listening to professor gerhardt make a speech about something dakota wasn't too interested in. her mind was somewhere else, a place it had been wandering a lot to lately. sawyer anderson. her rather distant and odd boyfriend.

"look at him. have you ever seen anything so masculine?" anya asked the girls.

"you mean guerrero or his wife?" buffy retorted, making dakota snort.

"i think she means..." willow pointed in direction of xander who stood in a builders hat and very tight tank top, drenched in sweat. "oh, very manly. not at all village people," buffy joked, sarcasm dripping from her voice.

"yes, very village people, actually," dakota commented, looking over at her brother.

"much sexier than the outfit from his last job," buffy added to the sarcasm. "oh, i miss the free hot dogs on a stick," willow whined.

"can we please stop talking about my brother being sexy," dakota grimaced loudly, shuddering.

"it's actually proven research that women pick partners who look like their brothers and fathers," willow told dakota with her signature grin. the brunette's eyes widened in horror as willow began to ramble on about the theory.

"please stop talking," she said desperately, slowly turning back to the speech at hand, eyes still wide of her face.

"i'm imagining having sex with him right now," anya spoke distantly as she stared longingly at xander.

"oh god," dakota groaned, pure disgust on her face. buffy and willow chuckled at their friends misfortune, listening to the remainder of the speech. once it drew to an end, both buffy and dakota began clapping only for willow to interject.

"what a load of horse hooey," the redhead spat, frown settled on her face.

the two girls looked confused at each other before turning back to willow. "we have a counterpoint?".

"yeah," willow looked at the pair, "thanksgiving isn't about blending of two cultures. it's about one culture wiping out another. and then they make animated specials about the part where, with the maize and the big, big belt buckles. they don't show you the next scene, where all the bison die and squanto takes a musket ball in the stomach".

buffy nodded along slowly, "okay. now, for some of that, you were channeling your mother?".

willow looked down, "well, yeah, sorta. that's why she doesn't celebrate thanksgiving or columbus day. you know, the destruction of indigenous people. i know it sounds a little overwrought, but really, she's... she's right".

"yeah. i guess i never really thought about it that way," buffy said. "i only ever really thought about the food," dakota spoke while thinking about what willow had said.

"with mom at aunt darlene's this year, i'm not getting a thanksgiving or food. maybe it's just as well".

dakota looked at her blonde friend, "i would offer you a place at mine... but now that i think about it, me and xand won't actually be there". she crossed her arms over her chest, "we tend to stay away from family chaos".
