~"Mal..."
I stood in a white open void all alone. I looked behind me and to my surprise, there were no wings. This was a dream, that was for sure but something felt different... as if I've been here before. Faint whispers clouded my thoughts, beckoning me to follow them somewhere. Before I could stop myself, my legs started walking on their own. One foot in front of the other, wandering into the blank unknown.
The whispers soon turned into stern voices. All with different tones. My name rolled off their lips less like a greeting but a command. Fear lit inside of me like a flame growing larger, my slow-paced walking changed into running. In a situation like this, I would've flown far away but when I tried, I couldn't. This only added fuel to the flame. Then before I knew it, a plummeting sensation spread throughout my body as my sight left my eyes. Though I was blinded, I felt my curls spiral away from my face when the air blew faster against me. But I never hit the ground.
Turbulence shook me awake from my dream. Or was it a nightmare?
I looked to my right and saw my mother once again asleep, resting peacefully, with her head on my left shoulder. A sickness filled up my stomach as I looked at her. The bad memories that normally rested in the back of my mind, began flooding back with every second I stared at the woman. Averting my eyes from her to the open window on my right and trying desperately to ignore the weight on my left shoulder, I stare out into the clouds. I didn't see much outside, just the top of the puffy white sheets that lined the sky. I assume we're somewhere over the Pacific hence the abundant tint of the blue I spied in the slight separation of clouds below. Thus, I couldn't fully distract myself from what awoke in the back of my mind. Bad memories flooded my thoughts before I could stop them.
The kids at school pestered me once again about Shetani. You'd think middle schoolers would understand the situation and mind their business, which they have until a few weeks after I came back to school. I've always heard the whispers and felt the stares on my back, even got into a few small fights with classmates who called him a villain but today they were beyond ruthless. It took place after the dismissal bell when the teacher left to patrol hallways for sneaky kids who'd start trouble. Little did she know, the real troublemakers were still in the classroom, cornering me. I didn't know them very well but they seemed to know all about me and my dead, "villainous" brother.
"Excuse me," I said looking down at my feet with my hands held closely around my bookbag straps ", you're in my way." I tried to shove through the three but was only pushed lightly back into the corner by the tallest boy with black short hair and glasses. My back barely touched the wall when my long wings came forward to cover themselves around my frontside, preventing someone from pushing me again. "Please, move.." I pleaded once again as the other two kids only giggled at my response. Looking up I watched all three of them as they looked right back into my eyes, laughing. Their mean words continued and I tried to ignore them the best I could but they were simply too stubborn to let me pass through. I shook my head as my vision began to change. I couldn't see the color anymore, almost as if someone put a black and white filter lens over my eyes. Fear erupted inside of me as my breathing became uneasy. What's going on? I could still hear the boys' taunts but they were quieter, like if I was hearing them from underwater.
"Bet your brother can't save you," the short one with bleached hair taunted before the lightest one continued ", Where is he now?" Once again I shoved past them and the glasses boy finally let me go through. I tumbled away from them and made my way to the door as quickly as I could. My vision filled with color again and when I put one foot outside the classroom my devious classmates called out to me for the final time.
