The faucets of the tub squeaked when Kanato turned them. In one arm he carried Teddy and the other stretched out, his fingertips held in the stream of water, waiting for it to become warm enough.
The water got warm fairly quickly and Kanato turned the faucets again to make it even hotter. Water flicked off his fingers and he shook his hand over the tub.
Sitting on the bathroom counter staring blankly was Haruna. Her purple gown was soaked up to her knees from where it had been caked with snow which then melted. The top of her gown hung from her shoulders, ruined now from where the corset ties had been cut in the back. The thin slip beneath was discolored with dried blood.
Subaru walked into the bathroom carrying a small bottle. He stopped briefly to look over his young sister who seemed not to notice anything that was happening around her. Hollow.
Haruna...
Subaru twisted the cap off the bottle and walked over to the tub. The bottle was filled with lavender bath soap which he poured into the steaming water. The bubbles quickly foamed up beneath the running water and filled the bathroom with its lovely herbal scent.
Two women wearing matching maid uniforms came into the bathroom together and bowed to Kanato and Subaru. One of them spoke to them both, "Reiji-sama sent us to help Lady Haruna with her bath."
Subaru heard them but barely paid them any attention. His eyes were fixed on his sister. She had always been quite petite yet had a graceful, noble disposition. Subaru thought that it wouldn't surprise him if she were mistaken by someone as meek; but it wasn't true. She was tough.
Right now, though, in Subaru's eyes, she just looked like a child. Small and frightened. It made Subaru feel sick to see her this way.
Kanato was also focused completely on his sister and how tiny and fragile she appeared.
A porcelain dolly...
He turned sharply and creeped up in front of one of the maids. "Haru-chan is very delicate. Be careful with her or I'll break you into tiny pieces." The purple-haired vampire vanished from the bathroom, leaving the maids shivering.
As he exited the bathroom, Subaru too addressed the maids . "Stop standing around. Get to it already."

One of the maids rinsed the soap from Haruna's hair as the other maid was working on scrubbing the dried blood from her chest.
"Forgive me if this hurts, Haruna-sama." The maid tried to be gentle as she washed the blood from the princess's neck. It was obvious someone had bitten her but by now the fang marks had long since healed.
Both maids wondered to themselves what happened to the girl who was known to be very kind and understanding to all the servants. Still, they wouldn't dare ask about it.
The maid who washed Haruna's long white hair gently wrapped it up on top of her head then went to the cabinets in the bathroom to ready the towels.
The other maid finished washing the blood from the girl's fair skin then glanced at the face of her mistress. Haruna stared down into the bubbly water, expressionless.
"Haruna-sama, do you hurt anywhere?"
The girl did hurt. Her body ached and she felt exhausted. But she wasn't paying attention and didn't hear the maid's question.
She thought only of her father's threat.
"Can you do this for me, my dear? I would hate for something to happen to your dear brothers if you were to fail me."
