I didn't want to put anyone in danger, so right after the friendly conversation with Sophia's father, I left. I wasn't exactly sure where I was going. I just knew that I didn't want to put Sophia in anymore danger than she already was.
While walking aimlessly down the sidewalk, I clicked on my watch and tapped on Layla's name. It took a few minutes before we were connected, and a small video screen of Layla was displayed holographically in the air in front of me.
"Oh! Gabriel! How are you? Are you close to completing your mission?" Layla asked.
"Not even close. Actually, I think I have to pull out of this one."
"What? Pull out? You aren't going to complete it?" Layla questioned as she shook her head. "You have to complete it! This is your last chance!"
"I know.... It's just the demons. They are after me, and I don't want to put anyone's life on the line."
"They haven't attacked you yet, have they?" Layla asked as she frowned with concern.
"Well...." I pulled my shirt down a bit to reveal my bandaged shoulder. "They sorta did. I need to somehow get this healed. I don't know how long I have until this poison starts taking affect."
"Poison?!? Gabe! You shouldn't move around. The more you move, the more the poison spreads!" Layla shook her head as she glanced around. "Didn't you learn anything in Demon Studies? Geez. You need to come back up immediately. If your poisoned, then you can use that as your excuse. Say that you couldn't finish your mission because a demon attacked you."
"Lying to The Elders, no thanks. I'll pass." I sighed as I found myself wandering alone in a park. I plopped myself down on a bench before continuing, "I think.... This angel can help me."
"An angel? Who?"
"His name is Raphael. The Raphael." I said while wiping the sweat off with the back of my hand. I was getting sweaty, and it wasn't even warm outside!
"Raphael? Wait, he's on earth? You met him? What is he like? I heard he's-"
"What the hell are you doing out here?" Interrupted a voice before I was tackled... by a large golden retriever. I nearly fell off the bench in shock.
I glanced up in confusion as I stared up at Kaileb. "Oh. You." I glanced down to my watch, "Layla, I'll talk to you later."
"Wait! Don't--" Too late, I hung up.
Kaileb raised an eyebrow as he pulled the happy dog off of me. "Chatting with your girlfriend?"
"No." I shook my head. Me and Layla were only friends, nothing more. Besides... I'm pretty sure she currently has a crush on my brother.
"Right, like I'll believe that. Now, answer me this, what are you doing sitting like a creep in a park late at night? Aren't you supposed to be with Sophia?"
"Well... For now on I'm going to stay away from her."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Kaileb questioned with a raised eyebrow.
"I'm only putting her in danger. A demon attacked her and it's probably because of me. You shouldn't even be talking to me. They'll probably go after you next."
"Then I'll kick their ass." Kaileb shrugged as he plopped himself down beside me. "Did anyone get injured?"
"Well, they didn't...."
"Did you?" Kaileb asked as he scanned me up and down.
"Sort of.. You don't by any chance have an anti-demon-poison-cure, do you?" I kid with a laugh.
"Yeah, why? Do you need some?"
My eyes widened as I stared at Kaileb, "Whoa.... NWait, seriously?"
"Yeah, seriously. Why?" Kaileb asked before he smirked, "Let me guess, you got stung or something."
"Close. I was bit."
"Stupid," Kaileb shook his head. "I'm not positive, but I should have something for poison at my house. My dad, he was a demon that got into a lot of battles with other demons. He sorta had to be prepared for the worse."
"Ah, right." I nodded as Kaileb suddenly took my arm, and without warning, pricked my wrist with his sharp fingernail.
"Ow! What the heck!?!" I yelled as I tried to pull away. No luck, his grip was too tight.
"Shut up, I just want to see how strong the poison is." Kaileb huffed, and to my shock, he dabbed his fingertip in my blood and licked it.
I stared at him with my jaw dropped, "You're insane...."
"I know," Kaileb said as he pulled a face. "Gross." He released me before speaking, "I have good news, and bad news."
"Okay. I want the good news first."
"I should have the cure." Kaileb said as he crossed his broad arms over his chest.
"Now, the bad news?"
"The cellar which holds the cure is currently being haunted by a few spirits, and they aren't exactly nice." Kaileb said as he rocked back and forth on his heels.
"Okay. That's not that--"
"I wasn't finished. The poison will start taking effect in a few hours, and when it does, you'll probably start hallucinating. I'm guessing you already feel a little sweaty, right?" Kaileb asked as I nodded.
"That's it, though, right? Just hallucinations and feeling hot?"
"No. You will probably grow antlers, want to spin around in circles, and snack on insects. Don't worry though, I mean, that's normal."
My jaw dropped.
"HAHA! YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN YOUR FACE!" Kaileb burst into laughter while the dog barked happily by his side.
"I hate you!"
[ This is a really short chapter, but I PROMISE the next one will be longer! But GAH I just freaking love Kaileb! He's so fun to write about! (^ν^) ]
