"I was in a field. Specifically, the field of desire. On the other end, stood a boy. A boy that I loved. We wanted to kiss, we both knew that it was forbidden, because he wasn't mine. He was my sister's."
I read before I was very rudely interrupted by my younger sister, Cat, throwing a pillow at my head. My older sister Margret had called us down to set the table for dinner. My mom had attempted to make Korean food. Key word: attempted.
"Hey," Jace says as he steps into our house.
"Hey!" Margret replies enthusiastically, giving him a peck on the lips.
"I'm not too late am I? I was trying to practice Occlumency but I ended up falling asleep."
"Hey Jace! Welcome in!" my Mom calls out from the kitchen.
"Lexi Jade," Jace says, acknowledging me with a high five before greeting my mom. "So, do you need any help Mrs. Abbey?"
We were sitting at the dining table, watching my Muggle mother struggle to cut some Korean barbecue with a knife.
"Hey Jace, hang onto this while I saw, will you?" My mother says glancing up at the Gryffindor boy. Jace starts to stand up but Margret stops him.
"You know what, I can use my wand to cut this up in the kitchen and it'll be ready to eat in two seconds, looks great Mum." Margret picks up the cutting board and makes her way over to the kitchen.
"I can't believe we aren't going to see her until November," Cat complains as we hear the swift motion of a wand cutting the meat.
"It's going to be Christmas actually sweetheart, because she has to go through training in New York before she can work at Hogwarts," My mom replies.
"Wait, are you kidding?" My head snaps up. "We're not gonna see her till Christmas?"
"Let's look on the bright side," Mom encourages. "Now that Margret knows how to apparate she won't have to use the flying car to drive you to the Hogwarts express this year!"
"I forgot I have to ride with Lexi Jade now," Cat whines.
"Feel free to take the Knight bus," I retort.
"If you need, I can give you guys a ride. I'm not disappearing, I'll be at Hogwarts with you guys this year," Jace offers. I give him a small smile in return. Cat says something about her driving us instead to which my mom sarcastically agrees with.
"What'd I miss?" Margret asks, putting some meat on Mom's plate.
"We were talking about how bad of a driver Lexi Jade is," I scrunch my nose up at Cat's remark.
"Yea but we were also talking about traveling so..." Jace pulls out a piece of paper. "I have a surprise for you." Margret takes the paper, I watch as her face falls before mumbling an 'oh'. "You couldn't come home in November so I figured I'd come to you! I got my apparition license and I'm coming to New York!" Margret's face pales.
"You already paid for this?" is all she can ask.
"Yea, I took the test as soon as I could. Why?" Margret awkwardly clears her throat and folds up the paper before whisking Jace away to talk outside. Cat and I sit in an awkward silence as half of our company has now left the dinner table.
I guess I should tell you a little bit about Jace. Margret and him have been together for the past two years. But before Margret even knew he existed, he was my first boyfriend. Well, space between the words... boy who was a friend. We could talk to each other about anything, we just really understood each other. We didn't stop being friends when him and Margret got together, things were just different. They didn't want to make me feel left out, so they invited me everywhere. Even on dates. They tried to make it as normal as possible, but I still felt like a third wheel. It's not like I wanted to steal my sister's boyfriend or anything, she deserved a great guy like Jace. So I did what I thought was the best thing, to write him a letter. Now I wasn't going to send the letter or anything, it was just for me to understand how I was feeling. But I couldn't help but think what would it have been like if I had told him how I felt about him sooner.
My letters are my most secret possessions. There are five total. Jacob from muggle school, Cedric from second year, Dean from Yule Ball, Blake Andrews from Durmstrang, and Jace. I write a letter when I have a crush so intense, I don't know what else to do. Rereading my letters reminds me of how powerful my emotions can be. And Margret would say I'm being dramatic, but I think drama can be fun. Just as long as nobody else knows about it. I stuff my letters back into their red velvet box as I hear Margret's voice appear in my room.
"Your room's a mess," she mumbles, flopping onto my bed. A brief moment of silence passes before I decide to speak up.
"Are you okay?" I stare up at my ceiling awkwardly.
"Yeah..." Margret starts. "Well... I don't know, I just broke up with Jace." My eyes widen in surprise as I sit up on my bed.
"You did what? Why?" It never occurred to me that Margret would want to break up with Jace, they were in a very stable relationship.
"Before Dad died, he said I should never train for work with a boyfriend." Margret tightens her arms around a pillow on my bed.
"But you love him," I prompted.
"I know," She simply states. I take another pause.
"So, do you think you could change your mind?" Margret thinks for a second before answering.
"No," She runs a nervous hand through her dark brown locks. "No it's over. When I was packing for work I had Mum make a box of things to take to the orphanage, I think you should do it too I made you a box."
I look around my room, gazing to see if there is anything I don't need anymore. "I don't really think there's anything I can part with at the moment."
"Lexi Jade, I'm leaving tomorrow. That means you're going to be the biggest sister. You need to set a good example for Cat, no gorging on chips before dinner and... clean dorm."
"Can we go back to talking about how you're sad?"
I decided to donate some clothes to the orphanage, in hopes to make Margret happy, while I was packing my trunk for Hogwarts. I make sure to pack my red velvet box that contains my letters in my trunk. I took them wherever I was staying, knowing that they would be safe with me. We spent every waking moment together until she had to go to the floo network, she decided to floo because the apparition distance was extremely far. I embrace my older sister in a great hug as my Mom and Cat go get her some snacks before she leaves.
"You gonna be okay?" She asks, rubbing my back.
"Did you have to pick the farthest job you could possibly think of?"
"I think you should look at this as an opportunity to branch out," she starts as I rapidly shake my head. "Make new friends!"
"No."
"It's sixth year, you never know what could happen."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
"Hey, if you need me, I'm only a letter away."
"Until you start going to bars, and eating corned beef with your New York friends and forget about all of us. "
"I can promise you I will never, ever... eat corned beef," she jokes. Mom and Cat arrive back with snacks. Margret says her final goodbye as she approaches the fire places, within seconds, she is already gone and in the great city of New York. I can't help but feel worried about what's to come as we turn around to go home.
