I open my eyes and see the bright light of the sun shining through the window. Oh no, I've woken up again.
When will it end?
I've been at this for so long, and I'm so tired.
I rise from the bed and walk over to the window, pulling the curtain further apart. I can see Vie playing in the field, picking flowers, she's wonderful sometimes.
She looks up from the flowers and beckons me over with a wave of her hand. She's always calling me to her.
I put some clothes on and brush my teeth, then I head out of the cabin.
She won't approve of what I'm wearing.
I open the door and shield my eyes from the bright sunlight that glares at me as soon as I open the door. Slowly I make my way towards the waiting Vie, with her hands on her hips and a disapproving scowl.
It's always strange seeing her delicate features twisted up in such a way. Perhaps that's why I continue to do things I know she won't like.
I give her a sheepish grin in hopes she'll let me slide, she probably won't.
"Mae, what are you wearing?!"
I shrug my shoulders and she sighs deeply. Briefly looking up at the sky and muttering something along the lines of, why does she even try with me.
When she's done making her decision on what to say to me, she continues picking her flowers, and looks up at me.
"You know it's improper for a lady in this time to wear trousers, why do you frustrate me so? Do you want the neighboring villagers to start talking about you? About us?"
It's my turn to sigh as I know she wants me to change. It's not my fault she wanted to come here, why should I change?
"But you know pants are more comfortable, why did you choose this of all places?"
She stops picking the flowers and comes to stand in front of me, she puts her hands on my shoulders and looks me in my eyes.
She's so lovely.
"Mae, you know why we're here," she caresses my cheek and I lean into her palm, "I have to protect you, we can't let him find us and we can't attract attention. I can't lose you."
The sun shines down on us, enveloping us in its warmth.
"Would it be so bad if he did find us?"
She starts to pull her hand away but I bring it back to where it was. Vie looks at me tentatively and I know I've upset her, this time unintentionally.
"Have you lost love for me?"
I sigh and shake my head.
"Of course not," I bring both of her hands in mine, holding them tenderly. I see the contrast of our skin, not minding the difference. I give her a small smile, "It's way too early for this, I'll go change."
She smiles the smile I've been waiting for and nods her head.
"I'll be out here, we can head to the village when you're done. We've got shopping to do."
I nod, giving her a peck on the cheek then turning back to the cabin.
Another place to call home for however long we'll be here. I look around at all the trees surrounding this field, wondering what sort of magic she used to shield our home from his eyes.
I didn't always love her, and we weren't always together, but it feels that way when I look into her eyes.
Vie has a way of making me crave her, at times I want nothing more than to be done and walk away, but then she smiles that smile and bats those eyes and I'm putty in her hands. She knows it.
