I had to miss a week of school because of my mum worrying that I would faint again. Today's my first day back to school. I was in Clay's car with Drista, Zak, Darryl, Nick, and Clay when Drista asks

"Why weren't you at school? It was fun not to have four people squished into the backseat."

I see Clay look up into the rearview mirror to send a death glare at Drista.

"I just got sick." I respond, not wanting to go further than that.

"Really? Because I remember Clay saying something about visiting you in the hospital" Drista snaps back with her snarky reply.

"Drista." Clay says, practically telling her to stfu.

"No, he's a big boy. He can answer me, can't you Georgie?" She says angrily.

"I fainted. I got sick and fainted. Does that response make you happy enough not to bother me anymore?" I snap, my tone getting angrier with every word.

The car goes silent and nothing happens for a while.

"Why'd you get sick?" Drista says, pushing me way over the edge.

"Because I have f*cking cancer! Now will you shut the hell up?" I practically scream at her.

I calm down and take a deep breath before realizing what I had just said. I just outed myself because I was angry at a stupid 14 year old.

I go to my first period and throw myself into my seat with a sigh. Techno, who sits next to me in the class looks questionably over at me with an eyebrow raised.

"Rough morning. Don't ask."

He kinda nods and looks away.

A few more kids walk into the class and a new kid walks in too. I don't pay any attention to him until he sits behind me.

I feel a tap on my shoulder and I turn around to face the kid.

"Hey, I'm new in this class." He says as if I didn't know that already. "My name is Karl. What's your name?"

I sigh and say, "George." in the most monotone voice I've ever heard. I hear Techno snicker. I turn to look at him.

"Way to seem interested in the conversation there, George." He says, still snickering. I scoff and turn back towards Karl.

"Sorry, I'm just not in a good mood today. I'm not trying to be rude like Dave over here is suggesting." I say and see Techno cringe when I say his actual name.

Karl and I talk a little more and I find out that he just moved here from Minnesota. We keep talking until the bell rings and class begins.

While the teacher isn't paying attention Karl subtly passes a note up to me.

Mind if I sit with you during lunch today? I don't know anyone besides you. I could always move after I meet someone new.

I scribble under the note my own note.

Ofc you can sit with me. I have a few other people at my table though so you can stay there if they don't scare you away.

I sneakily pass the note back to Karl. He giggles quietly after he reads it. The teacher notices this.

"Do you find something on the board funny, Mr. Jacobs? Or is it something on that note that you and Mr. Davidson have been passing back and forth in my class? You know, I could give you detention for disrupting my class but since it's your first day I won't. Take this as a warning Mr. Jacobs." The teacher says in a stern voice, glaring at Karl and I. I said the teachers were blood thirsty, didn't I?

"Sorry, ma'am" Karl and I mutter out at the same time.
