Last Day

I woke up the next morning with the sun shining brightly in my eyes. The windows had been cracked open and the light breeze gave goosebumps to my arms. I turned around to find Shawn's side of the bed to be empty. It was made up with a little stack of clothes that he had left out for me. My pj shorts and one of his sweatshirts were neatly folded next to his pillow. I slipped them on and threw my hair into a bun before going downstairs for breakfast.

"Good morning!" Shawn's mom called as I walked into the kitchen.

"Good morning! Where is everyone?" I responded. She explained that Shawn had taken a bunch of the kids down to the beach to swim since it was the last full day here at the house.

"They all wanted to get in as much beach time as possible" she spoke.

"Oh, nice" I smiled, turning towards the coffee pot. As I began pushing buttons, I heard footsteps come up from behind me followed by two hands wrapping around my waist.

"Good morning beautiful!" he sang. "You were sleeping so peacefully earlier. I didn't want to wake you."

"That's okay. I needed it." I replied, giving him a hug. Together, we walked onto the balcony and watched the kids play in the sand from afar. "Can you believe we leave tomorrow?"

"I know, it's gone by quick." he said. "It will be good to get back into the swing of things though."

"I agree" I responded, sipping my coffee. Shawn's mom came out holding a plate of avocado toast and set it in front of me.

"Here's some breakfast. I thought you'd like it." she smiled.

"Oh thank you so much! You didn't have to-" but before I could finish, she stepped back into the house. The next few minutes were filled with silence as I ate. Shawn kept his eyes on the beach the entire time, watching the kids jump into the waves only to be swept back into the shore.

"We should go swimming later" he said, turning to face me. A grin curled up on his lips as his eyes met mine.

"Babe, you have avocado on your face" he chuckled.

"I do?" I said, trying to wipe it away.

"Here, I got it" he reached over and rubbed his thumb across the top of my lip, placing his other fingers below my jaw for support. He nodded as it came off and continued to chuckle to himself. Out of nowhere the same pain from last night shot through my jaw, this time stronger. My hand shot up to my cheek, trying to find where it was coming from.

"Shawn, I think something's wrong." I said, confused as to where this was coming from. "I don't know why it hurts."

"Did you hit something?" he asked with a concerned expression on his face.

"No, I don't think so. It feels deeper than that, like actually in my mouth" I responded.

"Maybe you should get it looked at. I'm sure someone at your office would know." he said.

"Maybe. You know what? I'm fine. It will probably just go away on its own." I shrugged. He eyed me curiously, knowing I was making the wrong decision. "Shawn, I'm okay. Trust me." I brushed him off. I quickly grabbed my plate and smiled before returning inside. His parents were still in the kitchen and I thanked them again for breakfast.

"Oh you're welcome! I love to cook for you all." his mom started. "So, what are you and Shawn up to today?"

"We are definitely going to hit the beach for awhile. He also said something about going into town and looking at some shops. Really just whatever everyone else wants to do." I responded.

"Yeah, we might join you. It's such a beautiful day outside." Shawn's dad responded.

"Great!" I smiled. With that, I quickly ran up to our room and changed into a swimsuit. I brushed my teeth and sprayed on some sunscreen before draping a cover-up around my shoulders. As I made it back downstairs, I turned towards the back porch and stepped outside.

"Okay, we'll see you then. Thanks." Shawn said. It took me a second before I realized he was talking to someone on the phone. As he saw me come out, he hung up and smiled. "There you are."

"Who were you talking to?" I asked. He grabbed my hands and started leading me to the beach.

"Oh, nobody. It's not important right now. Lets go to the beach!" he exclaimed. I looked at him with confusion but decided to ignore it. The waves looked amazing and I didn't want to waste any time.
