Impossible

I opened my mouth and he immediately stuck his mirror in, using it to retract my cheeks. For a few moments, he concentrated on my back teeth then began tapping on each of them in random spots. He asked of any of it hurt and I shook my head, feeling nothing but the cool metal in my mouth.

"You said it was your jaw, right?" he asked. I nodded my head which caused him to stand up. "I'm going to take some x-rays then if you do't mind." Moments later, he had finished and uploaded them onto the monitor so Shawn and I could see. Dr. Finn took a seat and cleared his throat, signaling he knew what the problem was. "Rachel, it looks like you have two very impacted lower wisdom teeth. One on each side." he spoke. My eyes widened as I looked at the pictures.

"That's impossible. I got my wisdom teeth out when I was seventeen." I said, confused.

"Technically you did. You had your upper wisdom teeth taken out because at the time that's all you had. They probably didn't mention there was a chance for the other two to grow in later on because it's sort of rare. You just got lucky with some late bloomers" he said. "They need to come out relatively soon or else they could cause serious problems. I'm happy we caught them when we did."

"How soon?" Shawn asked. He had the same concerned expression on his face as earlier.

"I'd say maybe within the next week or so. We shouldn't wait any longer than that." he responded. I was so shocked I didn't know what to say. One minute ago I was fine and now I'm supposed to have surgery on a body part I didn't even know I had.

"I can schedule it right now if you'd like." Dr. Finn said. Shawn nodded and pulled out his phone to check his schedule. "I will say that sense you are older and your teeth are so impacted, this is a more complex surgery so the recovery time will be a little over a week. Maybe two depending on how everything goes. You'll have that time off of work but just be aware that this is slightly more intensive than regular wisdom tooth extraction surgery" he continued. I nodded my head and looked over to Shawn who gave me a sympathy smile. I could tell he felt bad.

"Let's just do it as soon as possible" I spoke up. "I just want to get it over with."

"We have tomorrow at noon. Would you like that?" Dr. Finn asked. "The next opening is in about a week from now."

"We'll take it." I said, sliding out of the dental chair.

"Babe, aren't you hanging with Abby tomorrow night?" Shawn reminded me.

"Yeah, I'll just push it back. I don't want to have a girls night if I'm worrying about this the whole time. She'll understand. " I said. He nodded and put my appointment into the schedule on his phone.

"We are all set then!" Dr. Finn exclaimed. "Rachel, you know the basics. No eating or drinking after midnight tonight. Show up early tomorrow to fill out paperwork. No strenuous activity after your procedure and make sure you take your meds with food. I'll fill Shawn in on the rest tomorrow."

"Thank you, Dr. Finn" Shawn said, shaking his hand.

"See you tomorrow." I smiled before Shawn and I made our way out of the building. "I hate you." I said, half jokingly as we reached his car. He opened the door for me and I hopped in.

"I don't blame you but at least now it can get fixed. I did you a favor" he joked as he got in the car. I laughed and leaned over onto his shoulder.

"I know. It's the right thing to do. It just sucks." I said.

"Hey! I did it and I turned out okay" he said, trying to cheer me up.

"Yeah, but you went in completely clueless. You didn't know the actual process of taking out wisdom teeth and to a dentist, my case right now isn't the easiest. It's a way worse procedure and I know that because I've done it on people before." I said. He pulled me into his arms and we sat in silence for a moment or two.

"Rach, I'll be there with you the whole time. I won't leave your side." he said. "And of course, I won't forget to record you when you act all goofy from the anesthesia" he chuckled. That made me laugh and I pulled away from the hug, seeing his eyes meet mine. "You'll be fine" he assured me.

"I believe you" I said, half grinning. He leaned down and gave me a peck on the lips before starting the car.

"Let's go home" he smiled.
