Ambers POV:

I open my eyes to see my dad hovering over me. Concern washed over his face as he sternly says, "Honey...we need to talk, now."

I groan, "Sorry dad, I have to get ready for school-"

"No," he says so fiercely, I go dead silent, it kind of caught me by surprise and by the look on my dad's face, he may have startled himself as well. He continues, "look...Tyler's mother called me-"

"What?" I call out.

My dad clears his throat, "She informed me that you two...broke up? Is this true?"

I bite my lip, trying so hard to hold back the waterfall of tears building up, "Yeah...yeah it is..."

"Aw sweetly, what happened?"

I swallow the lump in my throat, "Well...um...he...uh...has been cheating on me..."

My fathers eyes widen to the size of baseballs.

"...for three months...with...with..." a tear stains my grey night shirt, "...Emily..."

"Oh honey," my dad wraps his arms around me and squeezes so tight, "so I suppose they aren't coming to your party tonight?"

I shake my head.

"Good. If they do I'll beat them up. Alright?"

I manage to smile, "Yeah.."

"Good! Now you better get ready for school!" My dad stands up and before he is completely gone he cranes his neck back to look at me, "Oh and happy eighteenth birthday!" He smiles and then disappears, leaving me alone, in the midst of realizing that yesterday wasn't a dream...

I rub my eyes. I peek at the clock placed on my night stand, it's currently 6:28am. Ugh. Can I just stay home again and sleep? Sleep is seriously the only peaceful, non stressful place for me right now.

I hobble around my room getting ready for the day. I yawn as I clomp down my light blue carpet stairs. I make my way to the kitchen to find that my dad made me eggs and bacon with toast on the side. He had already left for work though. Oh well.

I gobble up my breakfast and head out the door. I duck into my blood red Honda and then drive off to school.

****

I pull into the black tar parking lot, I park in my usual spot. I check my phone, it reads:

3 missed calls: Tyler 💘
8 new text messages: Tyler 💘
11 missed calls: Emily
27 new text messages: Emily

I ignore my new notifications and look at the digital clock at the top of the screen, 7:44am. Perfect.

I take one deep breath before opening the car door. Am I really ready to have 3 classes with Tyler and 5 with Emily?

I have to be.

I open the door, step out, and slam it shut.

Here we go.

********

I'm doing okay so far. Its sixth period, lunch time. I have lunch with Emily AND Tyler. Well, I guess I'm sitting alone.

I make my way through the lunch line, chocolate milk, pepperoni pizza, pineapples, and cucumbers. The usual. I walk into the large room. I spot Emily and Tyler...sitting right next to each other! His arm is around her shoulders! What the hell?! I shake myself back into my destination. I see an empty lunch table. I set my tray on the table. I cringe as the blue chair screeched across the floor. I sit down and pick at my food. I hate this feeling...this feeling of...loneliness....I'm not used to it. It sucks.

I bite my cheek, holding back a tear. When suddenly, the sound of a tray colliding with the table makes me jump. I hear a low chuckle. I look beside me to see Brent, Tyler's best friend, sit down next to me.

"Hey loner! How's it hanging?!" He asks excitingly.

I shrug and plunge a piece of pineapple into my mouth.

Worry strikes his face, "Okay, what's wrong? Why aren't you sitting with Ty and Amber?" He noticed that I flinched when he said "Ty and Amber".

"Me and Tyler....are done..."

"What?!"

"Yeah, you're best friend over there has been sleeping with Emily for the past few months."

Suddenly, he looks kind of pissed, "That's stupid. I'll sit with you from now on-"

"Oh no you don't have to, you can sit with-"

"No, I don't want to sit with them knowing what they did to you," I'm really shocked. He almost sounds...protective...?

"I-okay....so you still coming to my party tonight?"

He smiles, "Uh duh, I'm so pumped, I think that..."

I didn't really hear what else he said. I just looked at him, studied him even. He was REALLY attractive, I'm surprised he is single. I mean...I've always had a little crush on him...but he is Tyler's best friend so I kept it to myself.

My thoughts were cut off by the loud din that filled the room. The end of lunch bell.

"So...I'll see you tonight?" He smiled.

"Yeah," I blushed, "definitely."

I watch as he walked away.

Do I really like Brent?
