Chapter 5: Performance

 Mia looked outside of her window, she remembers Daniel’s eyes being smeared with tears because of her.

How she wish she haven’t seen him cry, it makes her weak inside every time she sees a guy crying. For her it means that he’s hurt so much.

Today is Cantata, the first performance. A lot of people will be filling the gym to watch the performance, it will be scheduled from five thirty in the afternoon until seven thirty in the afternoon.

But before they proceed to the gym according to the schedule, they need to go to their classroom first and eat free hamburger and to have free water that the school is going to be provided. The nonparticipants will be the one who will distribute the foods.

Mia spend almost most of my day just watching and reading books, she needs to forget about the things that had happened yesterday.

Siolyn sat next beside her as she searches for a channel to watch “Hey about what I said the last time you saw me, I’m really sorry”. Mia  looked at her in the eyes and hugged her “I understand dearest sister”.

“You have been searching for channels a lot of times already, why can’t you choose?” she joked. Mia shrugged her shoulders, “because I still can’t get over what happened yesterday.” She said inside of her head.

Her  phone vibrated, it’s Dee “Hey Mia, I know that it’s been a while since you have heard my voice. Could you do me a favour?”

“Yes, of course.” She  retorted.

“Thanks, it’s just when my parents are going to ask where I am could you just please tell them that I died?” she stammered.

Mia remained silent for a couple of minutes, “What? They will be angry at me plus they will interrogate me later”.

“Just tell them that I was walking and that you found my body and that you don’t want it to be published in the newspaper.” She cried.

This is all Mia’s fault, “Where are you?” she asked her before Dee could hang up the phone.

“Mia, is everything alright?” Siolyn asked her. No, it’s not and things are starting to get nasty again. What is she supposed to feel right now? Their parents are still in the hospital, Dee is having a difficult time and that there will be a possibility that their parents won’t wake up before Christmas.

Mia sat back on the couch and covered her face with both of her hands, her eyes are smeared with tears. She  can’t do this, she’s starting to feel weak again.

Her sister patted her shoulder “Mia I’m here we could get through is together.” She said kindly. Mia hugged her, what to do? Is the thing inside of her head right now.

She’s starting to feel like she’s going to lose someone, is she going to lose her friend or a family member?

Mia wiped her tears and cooked lunch, she has to be responsible of taking care her little sister. No matter what happens, she knows that she will still have her and Justin.

Hours passed, a lot of people are starting to get inside of the gym. Mia took a deep breath imagining my parents sitting there on the gym floor smiling at her and Siolyn.

There will be two nights to have a chance to watch Cantata, the orchestra started playing the tune of Our Father. There will be singers who will lead us and that we have to sing also.

Mia saw the parents of Dee, looking for her. Is she supposed to lie and if not what should  she tell them? Mia looked around the soprano area and searched for Anjelika.

She is nowhere to be found, in Mia’s opinion she’s with Dee and her boyfriend teaching Dee how to survive being a vampire.

They looked at her, she winced. Right now, she’s starting to freak out. Is there any sign of Daniel or Justin right now? She is just hoping that there will be.

She  looked at their  conductress, they  have a lot of conductors. Their conductress gave them the signal for them to sit, Kevin caught her eyes. What is happening? Is the message that she got from his facial expression.

Mia just blinked and looked away, of course he won’t understand that her life has been more complicated.

They turned out the lights already and the other department or the regular one started singing English songs. Their school department is the only one who gets the chance to sing Latin songs.

They focused the lighting to the other department as she waits for a text message or a call. Thank God, my phone vibrated.

“Manang, can I answer the call?” Mia asked to the manang who is right next beside her. A lot stared at her, seriously? Their facial expression said.

Mia just ignored them, “Make it quick ading, I’m giving you five minutes and it starts right now.” She replied.

Mia ran immediately, this is actually one of the advantages of Cantata. The lights will be turned off and that you can freely do what you want in the dark.

She went outside of the gym where there will be less people who can acknowledge her from her department.

“Mia, how are you?” Justin’s voice asked.

“Actually not great, where are you? I need you.” She said weakly

“I love you Mia, I need you to be strong we’re handling things right now.”

Before she can utter another word, he hung up the phone. She is in the verge to cry right now, she touched the ring that he gave her.

He told me that she will be alright, she entered the gym and got lucky because it’s already their turn to sing.

The conductor of the other department gave them the signal for them to stand up while also giving the other department to sit down.

After the Lord Reigneth as the other department started to sing, she started cutting scotch tapes and wrapped it around her finger while the rest are done with the procedure.

As they enter the gym, they have candles and candle protector around it. They started lighting up their candles and we started singing Handel’s Hallelujah as the other department is passing the light from their candle to one another.

As they started singing, a lot of the viewers titled their head to face them. It is actually the most beautiful song coming from their department. They clapped their hands after they sing the whole song.

After singing the song, they put the light of the candle off using their two fingers wrapped in scotch tapes. They  will have to do it quickly, it will be sticky afterwards.

Joy to the world is the last song and this time all of the lights will be turned on, most of them sang merrily because it is the last song and that after this song there will be confetti’s that will be coming from upstairs.

They left the gym by traffic and Mia is hoping that the parents of Dee won’t see her, but sadly the saw her.

“Mia, have you seen Dee?” her mother asked her as she holds her hand. The eyes of Dee’s mother are smeared with tears.
