My mom drops me off at Kenzi's house on Friday after school. I haven't been over in a while but the house is just like I remembered it. Modern and elegant. I have always known that Kenzi had a lot of money but I had forgotten how much. A sleek new Porsche sits in the front driveway and since the garage is open I can see the old cars that are sitting inside. I remember Kenzi's dad is a car collector. Whenever me and Victoria were over for a sleep over he would ride us around in one of his fancy old cars. The memory is bitter sweet and makes me miss Kenzi even more.
With my duffel bag slung over my shoulder, I say goodbye to my mom and after taking a deep breath head over to the minivan parked on the sidewalk. Kenzi and two of her friends are already there. I recognize the one with the corn rows as Cheyenne and the other I'm not that sure. Great. Victoria is not here yet. She's probably late. Typical. Sadie won't come, I know it and don't blame her. When I told Victoria about the trip she freaked and kept asking why I didn't just make an excuse. I kept telling her that Kenzi put me on the spot, plus it would be mean. She agreed to come to accompany me so I wouldn't have such a horrible time but when Sadie said there was no way she was going we didn't push it.
When Kenzi sees me she waves me over excitedly and I can't help smiling. Parts of the old Kenzi still show through her new facade. Before I reach the car, Mrs. Locust, Kenzi's mom walks out of the house and when she sees me, dashes down the steps to give me a big hug. I embrace her warmly. I have always loved Kenzi's parents, her mom especially.
When Ms. Locust finally pulls back she looks me over with a smile
"Genevieve!" she says. "Look how much you have grown!" Ms. Locust always refused to call me Gigi saying that Genevieve was much more elegant.
"I've missed you honey," she adds a little more sadly. I shrug.
"Me too," I tell her.
"You really have grown up to be a beautiful woman," She addresses me proudly. My cheeks flush a little and I turn away so she won't notice.
"Anyway, sorry i'm keeping you so long, go have fun!" she waves me off and I happily oblige.
Victoria arrives shortly afterwards and climbs into the back row by herself. I have to sit in the middle row or else I might puke all over Kenzi fancy car and that wouldn't bode well. I'm next to Kenzi's honey blonde haired friend Nicole. She's nice enough but I still feel awkward sitting next with the popular girls.
"Genevieve right?" Nicole says in a surprisingly rough voice.
"Gigi," I say.
"Nice Glasses," Nicole comments. I'm not sure if she is being sincere or sarcastic.
"Thanks?" I say. She laughs.
"No, I mean it."
A couple minutes into the road Cheyenne asks if Sadie didn't want to come or if she was busy. I'm not sure what to say but In the end I go with the truth. Nicole looks at the floor embarrassed and Cheyenne looks genuinely disappointed. When I turn back towards Victoria I can see my confusion mirrored on her face. I wonder what Kenzi said to them for them to be so nice.
Halfway through the drive Kenzi pulls into a gas station. I suspect that she is going to get more gas but instead she pulls into one of the empty parking spaces on the side.
"What are you doing?" I ask, confused. "Oil?" She shakes her head and smiles.
"You'll see."
Oh god. I don't need any more surprises. This can't get any worse can it? But I have never been more wrong.
