It's Okay, It's Normal

I had a friend tell me a story
Of how they felt so blue
And didn't know what to do
So they went to ask their mother
Thinking she could help them cope
But the response she gave made them loose all hope
"You're a teen, it's normal. Don't worry, it's a phase!
Now get back to work and bring up those dropping grades!"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME
THIS CHILD IS DEPRESSED
AND INSTEAD OF HELP AND REST
YOU BRUSH THEM OFF, CAUSING ONLY MORE STRESS!
HOW COULD YOU BE SO NAÏVE?!
HOW COULD YOU IGNORE YOUR CHILD'S SCREAMS?!

I soon learned that their mother wasn't the only one
That society labeled our age group as "the depressed ones"
Telling the world it was a phase and would leave when we matured
It was normal and with time would be cured

The fact that this is so common is a shame
And knowing that stereotypes are the ones at blame
I come to let you know the truth
That depression should not be "normal" in our youth
Yes it is common but that should make you wonder

Why are so many teens living in a cloud of thunder?
How can I help to make my child feel joy?
Is this part of the reason they are so easily annoyed?
Cause when they tried to speak we shut them down and stole their voice?
Please understand that being depressed was not their choice.

"No one understands me!" such a typical teen phrase
But did you ever wonder why kids say this when their temper is ablaze?
Maybe cause we're confused by the all the rules others make

They tells us to grow up but when we act "grown" we're a disgrace
They tell us it's okay to make mistakes but one wrong move and things are taken
They tell us to express ourselves but judge when we are different
They tell us to be open and honest with how we feel
But when they hear we are depressed they ignore us like it's no big deal

I don't want to waste your time so I'll end this by saying
Depression is real
And it IS a big deal
Don't act like it's okay
And brush off your child's dismay
Seek help
Whether professional or have them talk with a friend
Help break down this stereotype
And bring teen depression to an end
