Jay Halstead P.O.V.

I walked into the 21st and Trudy stopped me.

Trudy: Hey, pretty boy. Do you know why Lena left before even clocking in?

Jay: What? No. Why?

Trudy: She looked green around the gills. Check on her for me.

I went upstairs and called Lena's phone.

Lena: Hey. What's up?

Jay: Trudy said you took off and looked sick. What's going on, babe?

Lena: I'm going to the doctor to find out. I'll call you as soon as I know. Okay?

Jay: Alright. I'll talk to you later, beautiful.

She hung up and I sat down at my desk.

Erin: Where's Lena?

Jay: At the doctor. She's not feeling well so she's getting checked out.

Voight went to his office with Al, looking at me every once in a while and then back to each other. Hurry up and call back so I have an excuse to leave, Lena.

Lena Voight Point of View

Dr. Greene: You're experiencing what is called a phantom pregnancy, Miss. Voight.

Lena: Come again?

I stared at my doctor as he started to explain.

Dr. Greene: Your body is creating the symptoms of a pregnancy. But there is no implanted embryo. I want you to go to an OBGYN and get a secondary check. Just in case. Okay?

He handed me referral papers for an OBGYN and walked me out of the exam room. I sat in my car and started to cry. I don't know if this Jay's or my rapist's. I drove to the district and went upstairs to Intelligence. Jay was at his desk. Dad was talking to Atwater and Ruzek off to the side. Jay stood up and came over to me.

Jay: Hey. You look like you've been crying. Are you alright?

I shook my head.

Lena: I'm experiencing a phantom pregnancy, Jay. My body thinks it's pregnant but I'm not.

He got the same look on his face. The look of disappointment.

Jay: Are you sure you're not?

Lena: I'm going as soon as possible to find out. My doctor told me go to an OBGYN just to verify.

Jay: I'm coming with you. I gotta know if this a real thing. Until then, we keep this between us. Okay?

I nodded. Jay pulled me close and hugged me.

Jay: I love you, Lena. We're gonna get through this. Alright?

Jay walked me to my car, keeping a hand on me the entire time. I drove home and made a doctor's appointment for tomorrow. I sent Jay a text, telling him the time and where the appointment would be. I skipped dinner with Dad and went straight to bed. I just want this doctor's visit done and over with.

The Next Day

Jay met me outside the doctor's office. My blood was drawn and I was sent to ultrasound. The ultrasound nurse used the wand probe and examined me. Jay held my hand tightly.

Nurse: There are no signs of pregnancy. No sac, no fetus.

Part of me was relieved. What if I had been pregnant and it was by my rapist? Then part of me was upset. I was starting to want a family with Jay.

Jay: Hey. You okay?

I nodded. The nurse handed me some wet wipes to clean myself up with, let me get redressed, and then showed us to the exam room.

Lena: Part of me was hoping for a baby. With you.

Jay: Me too, babe. But our time will come soon. I'm kinda relieved.

Lena: Me too. Partially.

He nodded. Jay understands me better than anyone. It's like he can read my mind.

The doctor went over my blood work, explaining the same thing I was told yesterday. Jay and I went home afterwards. I went to our bed and just stared at the wall for a while. Lost in thought. Jay say next to me and rubbed my back.

Jay: What's wrong babe?

Lena: Is it too soon to consider starting a family?

Jay: We'll talk about it later. Let's get you through therapy and then we'll talk babies. Alright?

I nodded as Jay kissed my forehead. He left the room, grabbing his keys off the dresser. I cuddled into his pillow, crying as I thought of how my life was going so far. Miscarriage, broke off an engagement, rebound relationship sucked. And now I'm considering starting a family with my adopted sister's partner. Talk about a whirlwind.
