One Month Later

I had settled into an apartment near campus and was getting ready for my first class of the semester. I walked to my class and took a seat in the back. I was slightly nervous. Then someone sat beside me and chuckled.

Carisi: What's up, Chicago? What are you doing here?

I looked to see Sonny Carisi. I smiled at him.

Lena: Hey, Sonny. I'm enrolled here. I moved to New York a month ago.

Carisi: Nice, nice. We can be class buddies. And study partners.

Lena: I'm so glad to see a friendly face. I was starting to feel like a loser.

Carisi: So, night school? Got a job during the day?

Lena: Looking for one. I don't want to live off my dad the whole time I'm here.

Carisi: I'll talk to Benson. You did great working with us before. Maybe she can find a place for you at SVU.

Lena: I appreciate that, Sonny. But I don't know if that's a good idea. I don't want to run into your ADA again.

Carisi: It's all good. I'll run blocker for you and keep Barba away. How's that sound?

Lena: Yeah, alright. If Olivia has a place for me, I'll take it.

Carisi: I'll talk to her tomorrow.

Our class started and we began taking notes and shared my textbook since Sonny forgot his at home. Our class ended after nightfall. We walked out of the building.

Carisi: So why the move?

Lena: Long story short, I needed to get away from Chicago. My ex was married, never told me. So I left and just picked up and moved.

Carisi: Damn. That's rough. Well, let's get you home. Alright?

Sonny walked me home, staying close to me as we made our way through Manhattan at night. He was telling me all about his childhood in Staten Island.

Carisi: I swear, my mom makes the best chicken parmesan. You'll have to come over for dinner one night and try it.

Lena: Are you asking me on a date?

I laughed and he threw an arm across my shoulders.

Carisi: Yeah, yeah I am. Look, I know you and Barba had a fling. And I don't care. But I'd love to take you out.

Lena: Alright. I'll let you take me on a date, Sonny.

He smiled and pulled me closer to him.

Carisi: I knew today was gonna be a good day.

We got to my apartment and I unlocked the door. I turned around and leaned in the doorway.

Lena: See you tomorrow then?

Carisi: Of course. We have class tomorrow night. And I'm off duty so I'll come by and we can go out to lunch.

Lena: Sounds like a good plan.

He smiled and looked down at me.

Carisi: I'll see you tomorrow, beautiful.

Lena: Walk home safely, alright?

He nodded and leaned down slowly.

Carisi: Is it alright if I...

Lena: Yes.

As soon as I answered, Sonny was kissing me softly. I felt him smile as he pulled away.

Carisi: I'll see you later, baby doll.

He left, looking back at me with a huge smile. I went inside my apartment, locking the door before I went to my room. I set my class stuff on my desk and changed into pajamas. I left Chicago because of jumping into relationships too fast. And here I am with a date after a month in New York. Let's take this slow with Sonny. No need to rush, right?
