i slowly lifted my heavy eyelids, and started to yawn. my eyes opened up to blinding sunlight that was streaming through the slits of an unfamiliar curtain. i squinted my eyes, rubbing them until i could see.
painfully, i hauled myself into a sitting position and every part of me ached, especially my neck. suddenly, i realized where i was and my eyes widened in horror.
shit. turning over, i found luke snoring lightly against my shoulder. he was different in his sleep, the angry lines of his mouth and around his eyes had smoothed away. his hair was blonde scruff, messy and falling across his forehead.
i closed my eyes. breathe in, breathe out. maybe if i fall back asleep and wake back up, he'll be gone. i peeked out of my left eye, and yet, he was still there.
my first instinct was to slap him, so that's exactly what i did.
he jolted awake, his eyes opening and he yelped. "what the fuck?" he looked extremely disheveled, his hair sticking up in different directions and his eyes puffy from sleep. "what did you do that for?"
i scoffed. "what did i do that for? you let me fall asleep on you!" i shifted away from him a couple inches, becoming aware to the fact that i was practically laying against his body.
"oh i'm sorry, sleeping beauty. you fell asleep and i tried waking you up but you wouldn't," his voice was deeper than usual, raspy with sleep, "what's the big deal?"
i stood up, in disbelief, straightening my shirt. of course luke would be nonchalant about me staying over at his house while i was dating his best friend.
this happened more often than i wanted to admit, the awkward morning after, when i either woke up alone or had to slip out the door, regretting the mistake. luckily, i didn't actually do anything with luke besides falling asleep on his couch.
"you must have not tried hard enough," i snapped at him, bending down to grab my phone which was on the floor.
7 missed calls from calum
"look, you slept on me. i didn't think to stop you," luke replied back, holding his hands up in surrender. he yawned, his eyes closing as he covered his mouth with his hand.
i rolled my eyes, "you're the most annoying, piece of -"
just then, my phone started to ring due to a call from calum. i held up a finger to silence luke, and swiped the answer key.
"calum?" i answered, biting my lip.
"lydia, thank god you answered. i felt like a dick after i couldn't find you at the party. where are you?" calum asked, his voice muffled over the phone.
"oh, um," i looked over at luke, who was rolling his eyes at me, "i'm just at home."
"okay, so i'll see you later, maybe?" he suggested.
"sure," i replied, trying to sound as enthusiastic as i could. i quickly told him 'bye' and hung up to slip my phone into my back pocket.
"aren't you a trustworthy girlfriend?" luke remarked dryly from behind me. he had gotten up from where we had fallen asleep and was now looking down at me. literally and probably figuratively to, due to the fact that i seemed to have no problem lying to my boyfriend.
"i hate you," i said, glaring at him and started to rummage around to find my jacket and my bag. all that was running through my mind was that i was so dead. calum was eventually going to figure out that i was here and i didn't want to imagine what he would do.
"lydia," luke's voice interrupted my thoughts, and i snapped out of my worries to look up at him. "did you hear what i just said?"
"no, but whatever you just said was stupid,"
