spending the final few minutes in the car silent, we finally reached calum's house. luke was trying to fall asleep until i gave him a smack on the arm to wake him up. turning off the engine, we both walked out of the car, and took steps onto the porch leading to the front door. i knocked on calum's door.
calum opened the door, his face brightening up when he saw us. he gave me a huge grin and wrapped me up in a hug, squeezing me like he hadn't seen me in a year.
"fuck, you're the best girlfriend ever," he murmured into my hair, quietly, but not quiet enough as to where luke didn't hear.
luke coughed from behind us, "while the romantic gesture is cute, i think it would be cuter inside since it's cold as hell out here,"
i stiffened a little and drew back from calum, clearing my throat.
i did not know where my relationship with him stood, but hearing the word 'girlfriend' come out of his mouth took me by surprise. fortunately, he did not seem to acknowledge how quickly i pulled away from the hug. instead, he took luke by the arm and dragged him inside.
the warm air welcomed us, a complete contrast to the crisp air outside. i shrugged off my jacket to hang on the coat rack and put the keys on the little table as luke followed calum into the kitchen.
they were talking to each other, but i could not catch their words. i could see the angry concern etched on calum's face. his mouth was moving quickly as if he was scolding luke and luke looked back at him with a blank stare.
"i know that being at home sucks but remember what happened last time when you were at courtney's house," calum whispered harshly which i happened to overhear when i stepped into the kitchen.
once they noticed me, both of them looked up, and i stood there awkwardly. "i think that you should get luke some food to sober up or something,"
calum seemed to take my idea into agreement and slowly nodded. "yeah, eggs and coffee are the best for that," he went over to check the fridge, frowning when he opened it.
"there aren't any eggs left, i'll just have to run out to the grocery store quickly," he said. looking around until his eyes landed on luke. "you should go take a shower, you smell like weed and beer. throw your clothes in the laundry while you're at it, too,"
luke, who under normal circumstances would probably have made a sarcastic comment, nodded, and started to head upstairs.
"lydia," calum started to say as he put on his vans, "can you make some coffee for luke while he's showering? there's a coffee pot over there and the mix and everything is right next to it.
his back was to me and i snuck up behind him. wrapping my arms around his torso, i whispered, "say please?"
he jumped in surprise, eyes glaring at me when he turned around. he didn't look angry, rather amused. he touched the small of my back and leaned in to give me a soft kiss. "please, go make luke some coffee?"
i smiled smugly then hesitated, not sure about how to approach him with what i was about to say, "so i'm your girlfriend now?" i asked, trying to maintain a casual composure, as if i was asking about the temperature outside.
calum shrugged, like it was no big deal, "i mean we could be in a relationship if you want." his eyes met mine for half a second. i saw a flash of worry like he was afraid i would reject him.
it disappeared as rapidly as it had appeared, and he was back to the carefree and calm persona that i was accustomed with.
before even thinking about what i wanted with calum, i blurted out a simple 'yeah'.
