She walks the long way
When the dog lays in the hallway
Knowing one false step will send
paws skittering on the floor
as he moves to follow
She cuts corners round the coffee table
When I sit on the couch
Eyes trained on the TV
A collar jingles
And I almost follow too
And she sits in the armchair
The one with armrests too narrow for my hips
And the dog faithfully at her feet
—Us two
Looking pointedly away
From the empty space beside me
