"Long enough," he replies. "Who were those people? They were not your target, no?"
"No, they were not."
"Then why were you with them?"
"Not that how I conduct my business is important to you, Ivan, but they were her friends. I can have either of them, and they'll keep me close to her."
"It is important to me when I'm the one whose job is on the line if you fail. What benefit can her friends have for you? You are not friends with her."
"I can get... close. And if I'm close to them, I'm close to her. Plus, they can give me details on her."
"What are you going to do?" He scoffs. "Fuck them?"
"If I have to, yes. The results are always positive. Now get out of my car. I have to be up early tomorrow."
"Katya," he says, leaning in. "Don't screw this up. Or you can say goodbye to that pretty little head of yours."
"I'm shaking in my boots. Out."
"сука" he curses at me in Russian, slamming the door as he leaves. I crack a window and light a cigarette before I pull away from the curb. I take a long drag, inhaling the smoke before blowing it out the window. There's barely a stub left as I pull into the parking garage. I drop it on the ground, crushing it under the heel of my boot as I walk away.
I did not have to wake up early today. I did anyways, just in case. I hit the treadmill, but that only takes up an hour. There is nothing more I can do right now than to wait. And I do. For hours I don't do much besides sit there and hope my phone rings. Maybe I had picked up the wrong vibe from Prentiss. It won't be difficult for me to find Morgan, but he's not my type when it comes to men. I'll do what I have to do of course, but it's not preferable. Just as I start to prepare for my dinner, my phone pings. It's brand new, no contacts. It has to be Prentiss. Finally.
"Drinks?" It reads.
I set it down on the counter. I know better than to seem too eager. I slowly start to clean up my kitchen. It only takes five minutes. That'll have to do.
"Sounds great," I type back. "What time?"
She responds almost immediately.
"8:30?"
I send a thumbs up in response. I consider alerting Ivan, but with the annoying little stunt he pulled last night, I think I'll survive if I don't. It's 7 now, couldn't hurt to start getting ready. I pick out my favorite strapless red dress. I know how hot I look in this one, and I'm certain it will have the effect I need it to. I curl my hair and apply some eyeliner and red lipstick. By the time I'm finished, it's 8. Perfect for me to get there a little early, prepare myself and come up with a definite plan.
"Hey, Katie!" Emily exclaims as she nears the table I've chosen. She pulls out a chair and sits down. I push a full gin and tonic across the table to her.
"What's up?" I say.
"How did you know?" she asks.
"Know what?" I ask.
"That I like women."
"I'm no profiler, but I pick up on those things."
Shit. I can't remember if anyone mentioned what they do last night.
"So... why did you give me your number? You were dancing with Morgan first. ."
"The dancing just happened, and that was fine. Overall, he's just not really my type. In men, at least." I throw back the rest my drink.
"I got the next round," she says. A few minutes later she returns with the drinks. We make small talk. If I cared about awkward, this would be it.
"Let's dance," I say, standing up. Hopefully she'll loosen up a little bit if I get her dancing. I pull her over , her hands in mine. We get to the middle of the floor, surrounded by other people. I spin around, pressing my butt up against her waist. I grind up against her, and slowly she loosens up. her hips moving in sync with mine. She spins me back around to face her, her hands on my lower back pulling me close. We dance like that for a while, and I swear you could cut the tension with a knife. Now is my chance. I press my lips to hers, pushing our tongues together. She returns the kiss, her breathing heavy. I pull away, biting my lip.
"My place?" she asks quietly. I nod, and follow her to her car. Score.
