I started this story when I first saw "Friends to the End", and gave up on it once Kion ended up with Rani. I don't know how often I'll update, but this is an AU to The Lion Guard Season 3. Kion and Fuli end up together. Everything up to "Friends to the End" happened in this timeline.

After Kion gives up the Roar and his duties as the Fiercest of the Lion Guard, he asks his teammates to accompany him to the Tree of Life so he can be with Queen Rani. However, Fuli sees this a betrayal and believes it undermines everything they have worked for. After years apart, the Pridelands are on edge as a neighbouring Cheetah Coalition threatens a war with King Simba. Kion is forced to return to his homeland and sacrifice his happiness for the sake of peace. The one thing that can prevent a war is a betrothal between the Prideland Prince and the Cheetah Coalition Heiress. "Everything I do is for the Kingdom".

Kion has ended up with Rani as a mate, but he doesn't truly feel happy. Likewise, Fuli is with Azaad, but she isn't that happy either. They don't know what's wrong, but will eventually come to realize the truth.

When Kion is faced with a mysterious illness, Queen Rani becomes depressed at the fact that the one she loves might die and is unable to attend her royal duties. With the crown entrusted to her close friend, Fuli does her best to keep the Rani and Kion's kingdom at peace. One night Rani runs away to be alone but the next morning she is found dead. All animals turn to Fuli to guidance but she can barely cope with the death of her friend as she desperately tries to find a way to save Kion which can only be found in her memories. The pair must take on the challenge of leading the kingdom without Rani for neither of them can do it alone. They must overcome any challenge they are faced with as well as learn to work together as a king and queen should. Despite the many challenges, Kion and Fuli try to hide any unwanted feeling towards the other as well as their friends as they soon discover the cause of Rani's death is more than what meets the eye.

Kion was crowned king of the Tree of Life. Now Rani's mate, he must face the adjustments and tasks of being ruler of a kingdom. But as Rani slowly grows more distant, he must bear with this responsibility growing heavier on his shoulders until it becomes too much to bear...unless a certain friend can share it.
