Anita Wynn is a 22 year old black woman who's fresh out of college with a new job that pays handsomely and an upscale apartment in the middle of an affluent city. However, her life wasn't always so glamorous. She was raised by her grandmother for most of her childhood due to her mother's drug addiction and her mother's tumultuous relationship with Anita's father. When Anita was 16, she met Jo, and the two fell in love. She soon learned that Jo sold drugs to support himself, and decided to help him. After witnessing the death of a friend at 18 in a sale gone bad, Anita realized that she had to make it out of their neighborhood, with or without Jo. She begs him to stop selling drugs and apply to colleges with her, offering help, which Jo refuses. They then break up. She goes off to college, graduates, and begins her new life away from the crime-ridden neighborhood she knew in her early beginnings, but she finds her new future tested when Jo shows up at her door one night, covered in blood.
