Let's talk Service Dogs!
***If you don't want to read the whole post, here's the important part- if you have questions about Service Dogs, or are considering writing a story with them, please please PLEASE message me!***
On to the message:
While reading some stories here and on other platforms, I've come across a few stories that include Service Dogs. For anyone who doesn't know me in person, I have a service dog myself. I've been a service dog handler for about four years now. I trained my girl myself, and have her successor in training right now.
While I love that people are bringing more attention to the benefits service dogs can have for some people, there are many misconceptions around the laws and how a service dog works for their handler. While at first glance, inaccuracies can seem trivial and not important, they can be very detrimental to us handlers.
So if you're planning on writing something that includes a service dog, please at least research the laws. Service dogs are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act- at least read their Q&A portion on service dogs. More so, I would be THRILLED to answer any questions about Service Dogs, the laws surrounding them, how training works, what it's like being a handler, anything! Whether it's for a story or just curiosity, message me!
Lastly, there is NO LEGAL REGISTRATION FOR SERVICE ANIMALS (in the USA). All online registries are fake. Service dogs do not have to be registered or certified. They DO have to be individually trained to do work or perform a task for their disabled handler.
Thanks to anyone who actually read this. Again, I'm happy to answer any questions, so ask away! My inbox is always open!
