I'm sorry if this is not the kind of update all of you were waiting for, but it wouldn't feel right to go without paying homage to the devastating loss of one of South Korea's most shining stars, SHINee's Kim Jonghyun. While I have not devoted much of my time as part of the K-Pop fandom to SHINee, I love each of the members deeply and still cannot bring myself to wrap my head around the fact that my bias, the one who has changed many of our lives, our favorite band members' lives, and the course of K-Pop music through his charisma and soul, through the stunning voice that will continue to go down in history as one of K-Pop's best, has left us in the most heartbreaking way imaginable. I am forever grateful to SHINee and the legacy they've left over the past decade, for it was a drama in which one of the members starred that led me to venture into K-Pop and open my eyes to a world unlike any I'd ever seen. With each song touched by the talent of SHINee, either through group performance, solo performance, or even through songs produced for other groups I adore, it becomes evident that this group will continue to make an impact long after their years. Even now, Jonghyun continues to inspire us, teaching every single member of the K-Pop community to band together and unite against the injustice of mental illness and its stigmatization. Perhaps there will come a future when the fandom wars cease to exist, and perhaps that future will include proper support for those who feel as if they're perpetually alone, even when they're on stage in front of thousands. For this future to be catalyzed by such a shocking tragedy is heart-wrenching, but I hope we all find the strength to stand together and achieve what Jonghyun would've wanted us to achieve. Good job, Jonghyun. You've done well, you've worked hard. You are more than good enough, for me and for everyone else you've inspired. You were once a shining star on stage. Now you can rest in peace, our star of the skies. ♡
