chapter nine: queen of clubs
This morning I woke up to a ray of sunlight blinding my eye. It was cold but the sun was trying its best to keep me warm. My heavy curtains had been replaced with light and thin ones. The type of curtains that blocked everyone from the outside to see in, except for the sun. There was a small plant by the window as well, taking in all the warmth after surviving the cold winter. But this plant couldn't survive the winter.
I inspect it, wondering where it had come from. Not a single speck of snow was on it. I think back, trying to remember where I had seen it before. A plant full of life would only survive in a warm town.
Is this from my garden?
My feet are freezing against the floor but they make their way up to the window. It wasn't barred anymore and as I opened it a rush of cold breeze enters my room.
My fingers wiggling in the sunlight as my arm is out. I stare ahead, forest and river were far away. My town even further.
Did he go all the way to my town to get it?
"Good morning." His voice jolts me back to reality. He's standing at my door where the sunrays don't hit him. It so early in the morning yet he was already wearing his uniform. Gold buttons and a blue outfit today, not like his usual dark one.
"Good morning." I use all my courage to mutter the words back.
"Breakfast is downstairs, come eat before it gets cold." Was all he said before leaving me alone once again.
I nod but mainly to myself. Only this once I'd go without a fight, only because he had brought me something from home. When I go downstairs to eat I see the dining table empty. His usual seat was empty as well and there was only one plate left, specifically for me. I hadn't even realized my smile had vanished.
Breakfast ended rather fast and I went around the castle unconsciously searching for the vampire king. Instead I bumped into Neon. She was already rambling to her servant, asking her to change the wallpaper to a different color. I'd be doing the same, red was starting to make me dizzy.
She was wearing a long silky dress with many layers. All the pink shades suited her blue hair. She looked like a princess. My hands clutch onto my dress and I swallow the fear of speaking to her.
"Where is he?" I said out loud but I'm heard they had noticed me before I even stepped in to the library.
"(Y/n)," she smiled. "If you're talking about Chrollo then he's in his study. He's pretty busy today."
"The king of a ghost kingdom is busy? Doing what?"
"Has to take care of his ghostly people." Neon held back a chuckle and waved her servant off, a sign to get out without being rude. "This kingdom is just frozen in time, it keeps the king from going crazy if he follows his usual schedule. Reading past letters, rewriting old letters, it's what keeps him sane."
"Doing the same thing over and over again?"
Neon's smile faltered. "Yes."
"But I'm not apart of your schedule. I don't belong here. If I'm being honest, I think I'm the one ruining your normal planned out day."
"Maybe the king needed a bit of change after hundreds of years of being stuck in time." She shrugged and her eyes focused back on her violet handkerchief. "I seriously needed it. Perhaps you did as well."
"Perhaps." I muttered and take a seat beside her. "Other than you, does anyone else come to visit?"
"Oh yes." She nodded furiously. "His friends come to visit every now and then, they're a handful but they keep things interesting."
