chapter eighteen: dear lucilfer,If I had the chance to run away again I would gladly take it. Not because I hate you, gosh, I'm genuinely interested in staying by your side just because I want to see how far this ghostly kingdom can go. Definitely not because I like you.
In fact, if I could fight like these hunters or Kurapika I would've driven a stake in your heart a long time ago. So why am I here, walking towards a group of armed men to save you and your people from death?
This is so stupid. I'm so stupid! I curse under my breath as I walk further out the alley. I glance over my shoulder expecting to see Chrollo still watching me from afar but he was already gone. I don't look for him, I could still feel his eyes on me. That's all he ever did, just stalk me.
Don't let me die, Lucilfer. I pray as I start walking towards them. I hold my breath as my legs start to move faster. And then I'm running towards them.
"Help!" I scream at the top of my lungs. My freedom was right there. My only chance of escape and I was going to take it. That would be the smartest thing to do and if they truly were here to find the missing woman then I'd be doing the kingdom a favor by going with them. I run fast, even with my burning lungs and legs I run until they finally notice me. A few raise their guns at me and I freeze.
"No wait! Don't shoot! I'm human!" I cry, raising my hands and dropping to my knees.
"Stop!" One of the men ordered and his friends freeze at his words. They clear way for him and carefully walks up to me. His sword glistens against the moonlight, it hung around his waist, heavy but his gun looked heavier in his hands.
He kneeled down in front of me and got a good look at my face. He brushed back my hair and then stared deep into my eyes. My heart starts to beat faster and I'm afraid of being so close to this stranger.
Don't let me die. Don't let me die. Don't let me die.
"You're the girl we're looking for." He finally spoke.
I gasp, "Kurapika sent you?"
"He did. I wouldn't have recognized you without your hair pulled back." His eyes widen slightly with surprise. Relief must have washed through him because he stepped closer upon realizing that I was truly human. Truly human yet inside I was turning into something else.
I don't dare look back. I know Chrollo is watching me anxiously from afar. I could practically feel his dark eyes digging into the back of my neck.
Goodbye Lucilfer.
"We should get going." I grab his hand, allowing him to help me back up. The kingdom isn't safe, more vampires than you can ever imagine hide in the shadows here. If any of them were to find out that humans were here they'd all come after us."
"You're right we should-"
"Hold on." Another man cuts him off and shoved his way towards the front of the group. "Why the hell would we leave when this is what we came here to do? We have weapons, we're all together and we're stronger. Let's just get it over with now!"
"What?" I blink, "No! These are vampires who are faster than you! Trust me I've been living with them for almost a year and I've seen what they can do. You're underestimating them!"
"No you're underestimating us." The man shoved me to the side, pushing me to another man who latched onto my arms. "If we end things now then we'll live a life free without any more pain!"
His group of friends roared with excitement. They raised their swords and flames, ready to take on the kingdom not knowing that the kingdom was smaller than a town. The man who had helped me up to my feet gave me only a glance. I knew he was hesitating but his friend had already encouraged the rest. There was no stopping them anymore.
"A drop of blood will have them all running to us!And trust me when I say these vampires haven't eaten a human in decades." I shout. "I'm saving you all, don't you understand?"
No. They don't understand. They just want to kill.
I was supposed to help Lucilfer and I thought I could be just going away. But these people were not that interested in me being alive. They knew vampires lived here from the start, they would've found me anyway.
Their shouts and excitement start to get louder. I grow even more overwhelmed and I'm not sure who to shout for help. The vampires or the humans. The man is still holding onto my arm, his grip tighter than before now that he knew I was going to try and stop them.
"Take her away." The man ordered his friend and he began to pull on my arm. I panic and without another thought I snatch the dagger that hung on his waist.
"Get off me!" I shout, slashing the knife across the air. The man gasped, stumbling back and I see red.
He bleeds from his face. The cut deeper than I had expected but anything to keep him away. Oh gods.I feel their eyes all stray over to me. A single drop of blood was all that was needed to catch the attention of a vampire and the man in front of me was holding onto his bleeding face. Red dripped down his arm, staining his sleeves.
His eyes snapped back up to meet mine.
"You witch." He cursed under his breath and my body grows cold. "You're not the woman they sent us to look for. You're the woman they sent us to kill! I'll burn you at the stake!" The man shouted, running to grab ahold of my throat but fire rippled in between us. I stumbled back, dropping to my knees as the fire grew even taller. It latched on to his legs, dragging him to the ground as he screamed.
Fire? Why's there fire!?
The fire was eating them up, angered that it tried to be controlled. From afar I could see Feitan, struggling to keep his powers under control. And then I realized they hadn't left my side. They hadn't left me alone with these monsters. Their screams blur in the back the moment a hand squeezed my shoulder. I look up to see a man, dressed in black, one would've called him a monster, a devil, a creature of some other world. But I called him other kinder things.
"Lucilfer," I say, grabbing his hand as he helped me up. "I ruined the dress you bought me."
"I think the red adds a bit of charm to the dress. It looks good on you." He wiped the blood off my cheek and licked it off his finger.
My chance at freedom was right there and I used it to save a vampires life.
