chapter thirty: the huntFeitan had assured me every single night for almost three weeks that the girl's disappearance hadn't been noticed yet. But his words hadn't stopped me from overthinking. There was a strange feeling bubbling in my stomach that someone was going to find us, someone was going to know what I had done, and then I'd be back at the stake, burning till I turn to ashes.
I shake the thought away and continue to embroider red lines against the dark fabric. Chrollo had allowed me to keep myself busy with adding a bit of character to his coats and so far it had done me well to keep me busy. Until I felt a pair of eyes from beside me.
I look up to see Chrollo watching me from his own throne.
"What is it?"
"Nothing." He turned to focus back on his journal. I shoot him a glare and keep working until the doors open. Just the sight of Feitan drenched from the storm made my stomach swirl, I had a bad feeling about this.
Chrollo had also sat up when he caught sight of him.
"The town has finally noticed." His voice echoed through out the room.
Shit. My heart drops.
"But?"
A smile twitched on his lips. "They believe it was a bear attack. She was known to walk around the woods at night even after her neighbors had warned her about bears wandering nearby, so it wasn't a surprise to find her dead. No one will know it was you."
I relax in my seat. "Thank you for cleaning up my mess...I owe you a lot."
"Don't worry. It's happened to all of us, it's in our blood to hunt." He shrugged and then left us both alone. He vanished in a blink of an eye, truly the fastest out of all of us and I wondered if I'd ever disappear that quickly.
I look over to Chrollo who's sitting in his throne comfortably, perhaps relaxed that no one questioned her death.
"Is he saying that to make me feel better or had it truly happened to all of you?"
"Back then our kind were allowed to eat without any consequences, after the kingdom started falling apart we had to learn to keep ourselves under control so every now and then someone would go off on their own like you did." He yawned. I caught a glimpse of his fangs. They were sharp and a bit longer than mine.
My fingers automatically reach for my neck where almost a month ago he had pierced those same fangs right into my throat. I was surprised it didn't scar that badly, now it just looked like two odd freckles.
"How did you get so far away that fast?" He asked once I joined him in bed later that day.
"I don't know." I look up from my page. "I thought I was dreaming at first."
"Dreaming?" His lips turned up. "You're always dreaming, you're starting to sound like Neon."
"I thought you were watching me."
"I was. I took my eyes off you for only a minute to refill my glass and when I looked back you were gone." His cold fingers interlocked with mine. They didn't warm up this time, I'm cold as well.
"You liar, you were asleep." I pointed out with a smirk.
"Can't a man take a nap, trusting that his lover won't go off on a killing spree?" He tried to lighten up the mood.
"Do you ever think this was a mistake?"
He blinked. "Mistake? What was?"
"Me. You turning me was a mistake."
