chapter twenty one: a constant reminderMy fists start to grow tired against the constant banging on her door. I was hoping that if she didn't answer to my voice then she'd eventually answer to my irritating knocks.
Neon didn't.
She ignored me the entire time and I was growing tired of standing in the hot sun. From behind, Chrollo watched from a distance. He carried an umbrella, shielding himself from the harsh rays. Not once did he utter a word. He just stood by the fence and watched me continue to knock on her door.
"Neon, please open the door!" I knock once again but not a report was given.
"She's not going to open."
My jaw tightens and I shoot him a glare. "Don't you have something better to do? Perhaps a kingdom to rule?"
He sighs loudly before turning on his heel. "I expect you to come eat dinner with me. Angry or not, you will eat by my side."
I ignore him and wait until he leaves for me to knock once again on her door. She still doesn't answer and I'm left with no hope.
Neither of us had gotten a good night sleep. I woke him up this morning, telling him to take me to Neon which he did without any problems. The sun hadn't came up yet so he carried me through the air in silence.
"Neon?"
"Please leave me alone."
"I only want to make sure you're okay." I press against the door, listening for any sound other than her voice but it's completely silent inside her house. Her voice sounds so far away, yet so close. "It was freezing last night, you didn't get sick did you?"
"The undead can't get sick (y/n)."
I smile weakly at the door, somewhat relieved to hear a retort coming from her. "You don't have to tell me anything but come sleep at the estate, I can't bear the fact that you're sleeping here alone while you're having these dreams."
She cracked the door open, I could only see half her face. She had bags under her eyes which only made it clear that this was serious.
"It's terrifying isn't it? Being alone in a cage." I reach out to grab her hand and she hesitates. "But I'm here with you, I've seen those nightmares as well and I promise we'll both talk about it together. Even if the rest of the world thinks we're insane."
"My lady (y/n), you're too kind." She said through a strangled breath. "That same kindness ends with you surrounded in flames."
My smile falters but I don't let her see how easily that twisted my guts. "Let's get you in the shower alright? And after you're ready for the day we eat breakfast. How does that sound?"
Neon relaxed a bit. "I am hungry."
"I can tell, I can hear your stomach all the way from here."
By late evening I had her back in our estate. Chrollo didn't waste any time sticking back to my side. He kept his hands to himself the entire time we walked her back to her room. Neon didn't look at him once. She didn't even seem to notice his presence and if she did then she ignored him.
