chapter nineteen: the distraction

"Good morning!" Neon came barging into the dining room with a poor guard struggling to keep up with her. He held her purse, coat and a few heavy bags of the shopping spree she had before arriving. "It's starting to feel really warm outside, I'm so glad we're almost done with winter! The kingdom looks so nice during the spring. That's definitely what a mortal would say if they didn't have to worry about the sun turning them into dust."

She laughed at her own teasing and took the seat beside me. "Do tell me, does it ever feel like you're burning under the sun?"

"Yeah, it's called a sunburn." I rolled my eyes. I sigh, taking another sip of my coffee while a servant placed a glass of blood for Neon.

"So the sun is everyone's enemy." She was about to drink when she noticed it was quieter than usual. "Where is he?"

"Out with Feitan and Phinks. They said they were going hunting."

"Hunting for humans or hunting for animals?"

"I'm not sure yet." I smile weakly, ignoring the heavy feeling in my chest at the thought of them bringing back a body. I can almost imagine it; a trail of blood dripping behind them and a body dropping in the middle of the table on a platter. A shiver ran up my spine and I'm quick to push my plate as far away as possible.

The three hours of sleep was starting to get to me and the bright moon in the sky was tempting me to go back to bed. I thought about it for a moment but last time I slept at night like a normal human Chrollo woke me up saying that it'd be harder to get used to the different sleeping schedule.

"They're probably just making sure we're out of danger. And what are you doing here all alone?"

"She's sitting and looking pretty." Another voice said. The red haired man from the meeting had arrived. "That's what Lucilfer wanted her for anyway."

His words wipe the smile off my face. I feel their eyes on me as his words processed in Neon's head. He took the seat across from me and waved an empty glass in the air to let the servant know he was in desperate need of something to drink.

"That's not true." I can't help but laugh, attempting to ignore his teasing.

"No he definitely did. If you were truly that important to him then he would've turned you already. If you were truly that useful or special you would've been turned already as well. It's been almost a year and all you do is sit and look pretty in that chair."

His words poke my heart.

"He means a lot to you doesn't he? For you to have to come in here and try to ruin my day."

"He doesn't, but he has something I want."

"And what's that?"

Both of them freeze and I already know who's back home. I relax in my seat and the door opened the moment my eyes flickered towards it. His eyes meet mine and he doesn't even need to look around the room to see that something is wrong. He's at my side in a flash, a calm smile on his face.

"How did you sleep last night, my lady?" His hand wraps around mine and he pulls it up to his lips.

"Fine." I force a smile.

"I'm guessing we'll talk later about this then?"  His voice is soft in my head.

"Definitely."

He squeezed my hand a little tighter before finally looking at Neon and Hisoka. "What are you two doing here?"

"The three of us were talking and we figured since the town looks so down we should hold a party. Just like we used to." Hisoka spoke first before I could. "It'll definitely be good for everyone to meet the town witch."
