chapter twenty: dreamcatcher

Spring was supposed to be right around the corner but tonight the weather had a change of plans. Snow was covering the yard outside and it was coming down fast as well. I could see the trees dancing in the distance and I knew it was going to be a cold night.

Yet I felt really warm.

My fingers picked on the blue fabric. My dress felt a bit itchy, constantly poking and biting my sides. I couldn't move because if I did then another never ending wave of itchiness would start.

It's starting to get hot.

Perhaps it's because his eyes are dead set on me out of the hundred people across from us. Guests are still coming in as well. It'd be a packed night. We both stood across from each other, holding a door open for the guests to come in. Many said hello, others gave us smiles and some couldn't keep their eyes off me- I used to be their food, now I was just a hero.

I pull my hair out of my face and toss it over my shoulder. My collarbone is bare, so are my shoulders. The sleeves are low and revealing, the pearl necklace wrapped around my neck sits nicely. It obviously catches the attention of a man I'd hope for.

I turn my heel, not surprised that he's by my side in an instant. Sometimes he's like a puppy and sometimes he's like a guard, ready for my command. And sometimes...sometimes I wish he could be more than just a friend. He grabs my hand in one and the other rests on my back.

"I can't believe you allowed this to happen." Is the first thing I say. His smile drops, he obviously wasn't expecting that.

"Hisoka is an easily bothered man, it's best to let him think he's in control. And this is just a party, it'll be over before you know it." He brushed my hair out of the way and planted a soft kiss on my shoulder. I hold back a shudder and squeeze his hand as I watch the guests come swarming inside the room.

"That man looks like he's in control, just look at how he's welcoming everyone to his party. He makes you look like a foolish king."

"You're really rude sometimes." His grip around my arms tightened so slightly that I almost didn't notice it. Hisoka must've felt our eyes on him because he looks in our direction. I snap mine back to my fingers and stare instead at my golden rings.

"Does he scare you?"

"A bit." I admit. "I just don't know him. Strangers make me nervous."

"But you let me, a stranger, walk into your church that night when you were alone." He likes to remind me with a smirk on his face.

"Because it was raining and you obviously had no where else to go. And you looked homeless, how could I ever refuse shelter to a homeless man?" His smirk was wiped off his face immediately.

"No, because you're a good person. And even though Hisoka might've had the idea to hold a party tonight don't forget that it's because of you, everyone is here to see you. Not him."

I finally look up at him but he wasn't looking at me. He was watching Hisoka carefully and I knew then and there that he didn't trust the red haired man either. Even if he had kneeled for him years ago or if he had made an oath to protect his king. That man was a true sucking vampire, ready to eat and ready to drain anyone who got in his way.

"Don't let him get to you."

Don't let him get to me then. Keep him as far away as possible from me.

He nodded as if he had heard my thoughts and perhaps he did. I spot Feitan and Phinks appearing from the shadows. They're well dressed but still kept their weapons on them. One with a sword and the other with their bare fists. Maki and Pakunoda are already having a drink for themselves, it's as if they already know it's going to be a long night. The only person who hasn't arrived yet was Neon.
