chapter twelve: a frozen estate

Chrollo didn't allow me back on his castle grounds. We went straight to his estate...he hadn't told me had an estate.

Far away from his kingdom was a warm, big and quiet estate that he had all for himself. No servants watching his every move, no butlers keeping the entrance welcomed, no one except him. It reminded me of the church, quiet and lonely. Peaceful.

It was further up north, where the kingdom had a few bright homes warming up from the cold. To my surprise I spotted a few kids running and playing in the snow, others walking around their neighborhood and some shoveling their driveways. They looked almost like normal human beings.

"They're vampires too?" I ask, finally breaking the silence.

"Of course."

"I thought this kingdom was empty."

"It's considered empty because there's such a small population. We'd hardly call it a town." He chuckled as he waited for his gates to be open. When it finally did he drove up the hill, the estate standing from far away. I take it in, all of it. Every single inch of the huge garden and towering building. It almost looked like another castle just more...for humans. Another cage for me. We'd be completely alone this time. No servants ran around and followed him here. Just us two in his big home.

We'd get lonely eventually, we'd talk more, we'd get out of our rooms just to accidentally bump into each other. We'd definitely be wanting each other more here. I shake that thought away. We hadn't spoken about that kiss at all. Not that I wanted to bring it up. Better to forget and move on.

"Here we are."

"Any rules?" I ask as I watch him unbuckle his seatbelt.

"Nope." He got out of his car and came rushing to open mine. He gently grabbed my hand and helped me out.

"You sure you don't wanna rethink that answer?"

"No." He smiled. "I don't care what you do here, there's a fence stopping you from escaping."

"Trust me I know how to climb fences."

"(Y/n), there's no rules here for you." He assured me, walking me up the stairs. "You're not my prisoner."

I chuckle as I walk past him. I open my mouth, ready to spit out another retort when the inside of the estate shuts me up.

A huge golden chandelier hung over my head. Art drawn by hundreds of hands, of the heavens and the earth displayed on the ceiling. Tiled floors covered the floor underneath my feet. He had many plants, flowers, bouquets somehow still alive yet he had told me that this estate was abandoned for years. A grand staircase welcomed me as I walked deeper into the warm home.

"I hate to admit this but I think I'm in love with your home." I chuckle.

"I'm definitely in love as well." I hear him say from behind.

"You have this place here, all to yourself yet you rather stay in that old castle instead?"

The glow in his eyes vanished, he kicked the door shut and took off his coat.
