there were many different ways for soulmates to meet.

in some cases, the soulmates would have each other's names permanently places on their bodies. in other cases, they would have a compass that directs them right to their soulmate.

of course, some of the soulmates would be more fortunate than others and have a much better experience in meeting. (y/n) could only hope she had been one of these people.

being born with no compass, no words, no markings or images it was safe to say that she would have a more troubling soulmate experience. one of the only other soulmate options was the body swap. after the eldest of the soulmates turned 16, at some point both soulmates would swap bodies leaving them to find clues to their soulmate's whereabouts.

after her 16th birthday, she began to expect to witch at any point.

her showers became shorter, making sure she was always presentable, always ready for a switch at any time.

however, what she hadn't planned for was a switch during a school test. an important one at that.

a ball came shooting towards her face, smacking her in the nose and knocking her off of her feet. her body sent backwards, scraping against the hard gym floor. the ball can be heard, slowly bouncing next to the lying figure.

"akaashi~! what was that about huh?!"

she sits up from her position on the floor, her right arm holding her upper body up while the other clutches her nose, squeezing it lightly to ensure there's no blood. as emerald eyes look upwards towards the voice she sees a looming figure coming towards her slowly, with large muscles that would make it easy to take her down. scared by the mysterious male's figure, she crawls backwards on her elbows, using her feet to push her further towards the wall behind.

"akaashi~ why are you moving away from me? we're  in a game!"

the boy's owlish golden eyes peer into hers as his head titled slightly to the side. behind him, she can see the large area is a school gym at that has a large court in the centre is filled with versions of high school boys dressed in gym gear and trainers.

slowly her brain begins to catch up to the scene around her, having an idea of what is happening.

"w... who am i?"

the boy's gaze becomes even more confused somehow as his eyes show the ridiculousness of her question.

"eh? you're akaashi! did the ball hit you that hard?"

his eyes widen at the end of his sentence becoming more and more worried as he goes on. to him this was terrifying. his teammate, the setter, a vice-captain, friend, forgets their own identity after being hit in the nose by a rocketing volleyball.

a copper-haired boy's eyes widen as he realises what is happening in front of him, walking ahead toward the infamous volleyball duo.

"uh... hello... my name is akinori konoha, i'm a member of fukurōdani's volleyball boys' team. i'm taking it... you're not akaashi keiji?"

the familiar emerald eyes of the two boys staring back at them both wide and with a quick shake of the head, bokuto catches up too.

"hey hey hey! you must be akaashi's soulmate! i'm bokuto! captain of the team and one of the top five aces in the country!"

"uh... yeah i guess so. it's nice to meet you bokuto-sa-"

quickly covering her mouth she hears the distinct difference in her voice now. it sounds deeper yet smooth. the feeling of warm honey tea when it first touches the tongue or the smell of burning wood in a fire.

as she stares at the floor a hand enters her vision, belonging to the first boy who had introduced himself. gratefully, she takes his hand and allows him to help pull her up.

looking down there are obvious changes to her body all over, feeling the face of her soulmate as her own and running 'his' hair through 'her' hands.

"oh, i'm (l/n) (y/n). the third year at itachiyama. it's very nice to meet you both."

she forces the lean boy's body she occupies into a deep bow towards the pair ahead of her. an older man walks ahead and places his hand upon her shoulder sending a very gentle smile her way before motioning towards the other players.

"how about we tell this one about our akaashi, mhmm?"

-----

his eyes open as he sees his teammates surrounding him in a circle, a certain captain ranting.

"-and then akaashi helped me get out of the vending machine and even paid for my snack! so akaashi will be a great soulmate so hurry and have babies so i can be an uncle! hey hey hey!"

the rest of the team burst into laughter at the rambling of their ace as he boasts about their vice-captain.

"bokuto-san... what are you doing."

"...eh? i thought i told you to call me -kun (y/n)-chan!"

"bokuto-san it's akaashi. let's get back to practice i'm sure we've already missed enough today."

the boy stands from his seated position on the floor and walks towards the basked of volleyballs leaving his shocked teammates behind.

his thin lips creep up into a shy smile with the tips of his ears being dusted with light pink.

-----

"-and then she fell over in front of the whole school
but i swear she's not normally that weird well actually forgot that she is sometimes and she's a lot to deal with but you better look after her alright?"

"...why did you have to tell him about that time."

her startled friend's sweat drops slightly and begins to scratch their cheek with their index finger.

"no idea what you're talking about (y/n)-chan~"

-----

"i can't believe you didn't leave a number or something."

"i forgot okay! i was excited to hear about him and i had no idea how much time i would have left..."

the teacher begins to call names to collect their test results as (y/n) can only hope her soulmate is as clever as his friends said.

"(l/n)."

she stands from her desk and makes her way to the front of the class pretending to ignore the anxious looks her friend sends her way.

"(l/n), you are a great student and did surprisingly well on the test but please refrain from writing your phone number on the papers or i will have to inform another teacher."
