LEXIE JAMES HAD ALWAYS LOVED the water. And swimming. So living on the coast and being on her high school's swim team was pretty perfect for her.
She trained almost everyday after school, or in the summer— all morning —since she was six. She loved training for hours and winning at the meets against other schools. She was good. She would never say that out loud, but she knew it. She was the best on her team until.... she had to give it all up. She quit the swim team, and let down her fellow teammates.
Why?
It was September 9th. Lexie was at the pool where her swim team trained during the off season. During swim season they would use the pool at the school, but this pool was near the docks.
She took a deep breath as she broke through the surface of the water. Her coach was kneeling down outside of the pool. He pushed the stopwatch and gave Lexie a big smile on his face. There were claps from Lexie's fellow teammates on the sidelines.
"You continue to amaze me, Lexie," Her coach complimented, showing the blonde her time on the stopwatch.
She ripped off her goggles and squinted at the time, the sun shining in my eyes. It was 0.3 seconds under her personal best. The closest she'd been to her personal best since she earned it. She smiled. She was so close.
"You keep training like that, and we will dominate Regionals this season," He complimented.
He rarely gave compliments, so she was absolutely ecstatic.
She nodded, a grin etched on her face.
He stood up and faced the rest of the team, "But for now, all of you need to get back home. We've been training for three hours, and I'd like to eat dinner with my family. So everyone, go home! Have a good rest of your evening and weekend. I'll see you on Monday,"
Everyone began to pack up their things that were laying on the benches outside of the pool. Lexie lifted herself out of the pool, and made her way to one of the benches where her stuff was lying down. She heard some of her teammates talking to each other, not bothering to say a word to her. They were friendly to her sometimes, but only when necessary. They had to be. She was the reason they won most of their meets. They didn't hate each other, but that didn't mean they were friends.
Lexie ripped the swim cap off my head and her long, blonde, wet, hair went cascading down her back. She grabbed her towel off the bench and dried herself off. She grabbed her phone and checked the time. 6:01 PM. Usually, they wouldn't be training this early in the school year, but they had lost Regionals last year. And their coach was determined not to let that happen again.
