The homecoming theme was A Night Under The Stars. There were black sheer drapes hanging from the ceiling along with glittery stars. The lights were turned down low. It looked completely different than the school gymnasium we were all used to seeing each day. Claire and I walked around the room to look at everything while Kyle went to get us some punch.
"Have you seen Lucas yet?" Claire whispered.
"No, why are you whispering?"
"I'm not really sure." Claire giggled a little bit. "Are you going to talk to him?"
"I don't know. I'm here with Kyle. I don't think that will be fair."
"You look beautiful." I heard behind me. I turned around and Lucas was standing behind me.
"Uh oh." I heard Claire mumble.
"You don't look so bad yourself." I said nervously scanning the room for Kyle.
"Claire, you look stunning as well." Lucas smiled, a genuine smile.
"Thank you, Lucas. Who did you bring?" She asked, she appeared to be scanning the room also.
"I came stag." He said rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Oh." Claire and I both said in unison and then we both let out and uncomfortable laugh.
"Am I interrupting something?" I closed my eyes when I heard this voice. I knew without having to turn around it was Kyle.
"Actually you are." Lucas rebutted. "What are you even doing here?"
"I came with Ashlyn." Kyle said.
"And Claire." I added quickly, thinking that would help the situation for some reason.
"I see. Well you guys enjoy your night." Lucas said turning and walking away.
Kyle handed Claire and I our glasses of punch. I wanted to chase after Lucas. We needed to talk. I hadn't given him a chance to give me his side of the story and now he probably thinks that I chose Kyle over him. I had to find a way to talk to Lucas without causing another brawl between him and Kyle.
"Claire, will you go to the bathroom with me?" I said abruptly.
"What you can't go by yourself." She laughed.
"Please." I said raising my eyebrows as I said it.
"Oh yeah sure."
"We will be back." I said as Claire and I handed him our glasses. "Feel free to go dance or mingle." I added as we were walking away.
"Oh. Okay." I heard him say behind us.
"What's going on?" Claire asked when we got to the bathroom.
I quickly checked to make sure that we were alone. "I need to figure out a way to talk to Lucas without Kyle seeing me. You were right this was a big mistake, but I can't take it back now. I just need to fix it without causing any more damage."
"Well, I'm not going to say I told you so, but I kind of did."
"I know. I know." I sighed
"How can I help?" Claire asked.
"I don't know. I just need Kyle to be distracted I guess. I need to talk to Lucas. I need to tell him how I feel."
"I think you should tell Kyle."
"I don't want to hurt him." I knew she was right, I just didn't want to do anymore damage than I had already done. I knew Kyle and I were not going to get back together. It just wasn't meant to be. I couldn't miss my chance to be with Lucas.
"You're right." I closed my eyes and said a silent prayer that everything was going to be okay and that Kyle wouldn't be too mad at me. "I'm going to go find Kyle."
"Good luck." She said as I was walking out.
When I went back to the gym I started looking around and I immediately spotted Kyle. He was sitting with Ryan at one of the tables next to the food table.
"Hey." I said as I walked up to the table.
"Hey!" They both said back to me,
"Ryan, do you mind if I talk to Kyle alone?"
"Yeah sure!" He jumped up and gave me a wink. "I'm going to go find Claire and make her dance with me."
"Good luck with that." I laughed as he walked away.
"Is everything okay?" Kyle asked as I sat down next to him.
"Yes, well, no. I will always care about you Kyle. You were my first real boyfriend and that is something I will never forget." As I am talking he is shifting in his seat. I feel absolutely terrible. "I just don't want to lead you on or make you think something is going to happen when I know that it's not going to."
"But it could. If you would give it a chance."
"I think we had our chance. I think you're a great person, but I think my heart is somewhere else." He can hardly look me in the eyes.
"Okay." He finally says. "I want you to be happy. That's all I've ever wanted for you and I'm not going to stand in the way. So go get him."
"I'm sorry Kyle." I say as I start to stand up.
"I know you are." He half smiled. "Now go find Lucas."
I nodded and I walked away. And that was the end of me and Kyle.
I walked around the entire gym and there was no sign of Lucas anywhere. I even had Ryan check the guys bathroom with no luck.
"Where could he be?" I asked Claire and Ryan.
"I don't know. Try to call him." Claire said.
"Okay." I pulled my phone out of my clutch and called. No answer. We stood there trying to think of any place that we hadn't checked. Then it dawned on me. "I know where he is!"
