THE TOY SHOPPE y/n worked at was fairly crowded the eve of christmas as civilians throughout the town desperately sought to search for last minute gifts for those who were worth giving.

the amount of pressure placed upon y/n was immense-- her whole shift consisted of herself being on her own two feet for hours, writing receipts for toy purchases and boxing and wrapping gifts for those who desired the service.

quickly though, a boy she'd never seen before walked into the establishment and rapidly caught her attention from across the room. he had silk raven curls and bright, yet pale skin which made him easy to spot.

her eyes were on him for a while despite the awfully crowded room, he didn't seem to notice though, his eyes were focused on the displayed train set that moved in the center of the store.

"y/n! the phone!" y/n manager yelled at her from across the room which broke her gaze on the boy. she shook her head and recollected herself. "i'm on it ma'am."

the phone call ended and so did y/n's fixated gaze on the boy who caught her attention at her work. she searched for him with her eyes across the room, but he was no where to be found. she sighed, not sure why she was so captivated with the boy but also disappointed she didn't have the opportunity to talk to him as well.

the girl then continued about her work not giving it anymore thought. while jotting some information, she felt someone peering over her as she did so.

looking up, y/n caught the gaze of the boy from the across the room, the one she was so intrigued by. from up close she could easily spot the freckles splattered across his defining nose and cheekbones and the dimples that sunk in while he was smiling at her.

"hi, i'm here for the nancie doll of this year," he expressed calmly while y/n was still clearly shaken up by the sight of him in front of her.

"o-oh sir, i'm sorry but we're all sold out- b-but we've got plenty of other dolls-"

"when you were eight, what did you want for christmas?" he asked the stammering girl in a serious manner-- almost as if he was conducting an interview for her. y/n thought to herself for a while before saying, "i really wanted a train set."

"a train set?" the boy asked now growing intrigued. "not dolls or dresses, but a train set?"

"yes, i grew very fond of train sets since my father worked on trains when i was little," she explained further before flipping the conversation around. "and you? what did you want for christmas when you were eight?"

the boy thought to himself for some seconds, unable to come up with an answer so he simply said, "i can't recall."

y/n awkwardly shook her head at his response, unsure of what to say but also sure she wanted this conversation to last longer. the two looked in each other's eyes which was safe to say made y/n weak in the knees.

"well, maybe my sister'll like a train set, perhaps," the boy said, awkwardly breaking their unintended staring contest. "thank you...?"

"y/n. you're welcome-"

"miles. miles fairchild," he responded proudly. with the minutes remaining y/n had gotten miles' address for the toy to be shipped to his home on christmas day before he left the shoppe, longing to see the girl again.
