kokichi looked outside the window. He hadn't slept. Snow poured like ashes from a volcano—it was beautiful.

its a winter wonderland!! He nearly yelled, almost waking the other two occupants of the orphange room. I have to get maki! She'd love this!

kokichi climbed down from his bunk and made his way to the girls' wing, making his way to maki's room.

he knocked harshly before just letting himself in. He knew maki had no roommates to wake up in the morning.

"maki maki! mak-" Kokichi's eyes furrowed. Where was she?...Where was her stuff?

kokichi looked through the drawers—nothing was there. He checked the room number.

maki harukawa: room 195

this surely was her room.

"maki! Come out! this isn't funny!.." He said reluctantly, searching every inch of that room.

the blizzard raged on as he found a note taped under the single, twin bed.

hi ouma.
or, whoever found this. if reading this and your not ouma go away and give it to him.
...
im sorry for leaving you. for leaving the orphanage. it...wasn't...planned, persay.
the people just...came and...got me.
they're erasing my entire...existence. ouma, you need to leave.

kokichi could see tear drops and maki's usually very neat and tidy handwriting becoming shaky. Tears pricked at his eyes.

they're coming for everyone. everyone.
you need to leave. you need to. take my coat, my boots, my scarf, take it. all of it. leave. pack what you need, and leave.

kokichi breathed in shakily, he gasped for air as his lungs refused to let air in.

he nodded, stuffing the note in his pocket and grabbing all the stuff maki had hidden. Her black coat, her snow boots, her checkered scarf, and her dark black overalls. He chocked back a sob before getting his winter, black-and-white stripes socks on.

he grabbed his bag and stole food, a medical kit, and dashed out the door.

his tears froze to ice, and he could barely see. His vision was blurry, not just because of the blizzard.

he left behind the orphange as a large black care showed up. He only started to sprint harder.

—{two months later}—

MISSING CHILD: KOKICHI OUMA
PLEASE CALL [NUMBER] IF YOU FIND HIM.
SHORT, PALE, BLACK AND BROWN HAIRED BOY WITH PURPLE AND YELLOW EYES.

kokichi tore down the poster and drank what little remaining water he had.

he'd convinced the convince store to let him have a job there—even though he was only 12–and had a...steady, income. He tore down any and all missing papers he found, and lived in a small alleyway.

he counted his money, fifteen dollars. He'd be able to get food and drinks and maybe a medical kit. He'd already gone through the one her brought.

"...a child?" Kokichi flinched back and got up to run before he saw a nice looking lady over him...he couldn't trust anyone.

"who are you? Where are you from? Are you one of the people who took her?" He demanded, tears threatening to fall down his eyes, he clutched the checkered scarf he had.

"huh? Someone took your...sibling...?"

"sure. Lets go with that." The boy spat, stuffing all his things—there really wasn't anything there, just some food and drinks and bandages—in his bag.

the girl blinked. "Well, I'm Inoko," she murmured, giving the small boy a hand.

"..." Kokichi stayed silent, "I'm- m- maki." He blurted. God that was a dumb de-

"well hello maki. Would you like to come stay with me? I live in a city not too far from here."

kokichi blinked. That worked?...

he hesitated for a moment. Well, many minutes, more like. "S- sure." He mumbled, blinking.

inoko smiled. "Good! Here," she took off her coat. "You must be freezing—how long have you been out here for?"

"..." He didn't respond for a moment, thinking. "I don't remember." He lied.

the girl's look of worry scared him. She was...so much like maki.

"well, maki, lets go." She smiled, grabbing his backpack and taking his hand.

kokichi didn't understand. He was a child. A bratty child. This girl looked no older than 18. Why was she being so kind? Most people would look away and...

he stoped thinking for a moment. Why did he chose the name maki, again? Whatever.

"For now," inoko smiled as she and kokichi got in the car. "You'll go by my last name; Tsukishima. Maki tsukishima is your name, 'kay? And I'm your sister, inoko tsukishima."

kokichi nodded. "I'll get you a card in my city after we get there."

she smiled.

.....

kokichi didn't trust her. She was too good to be true.

kokichi looked around as they entered the city, inoko parking in a seven eleven and grabbing some things. She was gone for ten minutes.

.......

kokichi took his bag, some of inoko's money, and left. He ran his way to the train station and payed the ticketer—getting on the soonest train to the farthest city.

....

he'd be safe there.

.....

under the name maki, he'd be safe there.
