"What about a bucket list?" "Huh?" I turned to him, tilting my head slightly. "You know, a bucket list. Where we write down a list of things we want to do."
That sounded nice, I'd never really thought of doing something like that before. Mom had said something about her having one when she was younger with dad. Maybe it would be fun.
"Sure, but that means more memories for you to remind me of." I said to him, a smile. He put on a determined look on his face and blurted out, "I'm up for the challenge! Easy peasy!" He was pretty confident as he floated around on a search for something to write with and write on.
I sat back on my bed with a huff, we had gotten back from the meteor shower just hours ago. Mom went straight to work and I went on and on about how awesome it was until Rei looked like he was going to burst a eardrum from me blabbering so much.
He came back and handed me a old black notebook with a pencil. "First we need a unique title for it!" He spoke, resting a hand on his chin in thought.
I hummed, don't people combine their names for things? I asked myself. "We could put the meaning of our names together?" I proposed my idea to him. He lit up, already putting them together in his head.
"Rei in Japanese means 'soul' or 'spirit', and Kage means 'shadow'." I already knew what he was going to say next, "Spirit Shadow!" We said in unison.
He blinked looking at each other before smiling like idiots. "Well that was easy enough." I chimed, writing the name at the top of the page.
The adventures of Spirit Shadow huh. Sounded nice. "Now we just need to think of a bunch of things we want to do. Which we can always add onto it later, but let's get some as a start." I added.
I said that yet we sat there for almost 2 hours just thinking of ideas and perfecting the list till it was completed. In the end we got this.
(The Adventures of) Spirit Shadow
1.) Jump in puddles after the rain
2.) Have a horror movie marathon
3.) Paint portraits of each other
4.) Go to a park
5.) Make hot cocoa on a rainy day
6.) Build a snowman
7.) Have a snowball fight
8.) Watch the sunset from a roof
9.) Carve our names in a tree
10.) Teach each other something new
11.) Make a music playlist together
12.) Go on a long bike ride to somewhere new (preferably not down a hill)
13.) Have a picnic with a good view
14.) Finish Rei's unfinished business
That was it, we decided to just keep it at that and to complete them in no set time or order. I ripped out the page and hung it up on my cork board with a smile.
Rei held up his hand in front of me, I held my up and slapped his, completing the high five. "We got this." He added with a gleam.
I never new just how much I had missed this, the feeling of having a friend. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom with all my heart, but it can get lonely.
Even if he wasn't alive, having a ghost guardian as a friend was just as good. I want to get to know him better and know what happened to him, but for now I just have to focus on a bucket list.
And lunch, I thought looking at my watch.
