For once it's not my face that's red, but my hands as I grip the handles. My knuckles colored with a mix of both white and red from my grip and the cold biting at them.
It had been a rush to get out of the house, and in that I had forgotten my gloves. Once again we both sat on my bike, cold wind and snowflakes mixing into our hair. The both of us sharing earbuds, one ear filled with the melody of our playlist, the other of the cool silence.
Rei had convinced me to go out because today was one of the 'warmer' days this week, everyday after this will only get colder. So of course I gave in.
Suddenly a small wave of warmth washed over my hands, looking over him at them. Rei had gently laid his hands on mine. I quietly smiled and enjoyed the feeling. "Thanks." I whispered to him and he nodded, looking forward to our destination.
We were currently heading to the park, the one were we had landing in the flower field what seemed like ages ago. There we planed to complete our two snow related bucket list tasks. A small sense of dread hung in the air, and I couldn't quite place my finger on what is was.
Shrugging it off as we got to the park, the sidewalks generously plowed off, small mountains of snow besides them. Soon we came up to a familiar bench and hoped off, putting up my kickstand as we stoped. Setting my small bag on the bench as well, it just contained water and my iPad, as well as our earbuds that I put in there.
"Kage look!" Rei yelled for me. Turning to face him, my face held a smile on it. He stood next to the tree that had our names carved into it, snow carefully coating the tree like a blanket. I had long forgotten about our first adventures on our bucket list.
I pulled a smirk to my face as I got a idea. Quickly I pulled my sleeves over both my hands to shelter them. Bending down while he wasn't paying attention, scooping a good amount of snow into my hands and patting it into shape.
What I held was a weapon, a fight starter.
A snowball.
Taking a step back and holding it up I aimed, then threw. It hit the back of his head, shoving him forward. I laughed and watched as he stood there, presumably in shock. But soon my laughter faded as I knew what was going on. This always happened.
Rei slowly turned to me, something evident in his hands. He held a snowball. Shit. I started to run as fast as I could carry myself. My shoes disappearing into the snow with each step.
The world around me was a huge blurry white wonderland. Snow falling in a slow motion pattern. Then it happened. Impact. A snowball hit me it my back mid step causing me to fall forward.
Once I was embedded in the snow around me I turned around to face the culprit. Rei leaned over me, face studying mine with a smug smile. We were both quiet as the moment mixed in with the snow. My heart trying to calm down from my feeling of 'panicking' and from running. I smiled back and grasped a fistful of snow, and slamming it right into his face.
The calm silence breaking again with my giggles and soon his laughter as well. Warmth in my chest warmed me up in the moment. He helped me back up and we decided to start on our snowman.
While he rolled up some snow for the body I tried my best to scavenge through the snow to find some small rocks and sticks for the face and such. After a while I trudged back to Rei, him putting the finishing touches on the body.
My pockets fulls of rocks and my hands occupied with sticks. "Here." I handed him the sticks and a few rocks for the body. I carefully took my time pushing the rocks into the snow structure, soon a face formed. Eyes, along with a nose and mouth. Stick arms and rock buttons made up the body. We both stood back, side by side and admired our work.
"Looks nice." Rei said, to which I agreed. We slowly made our way back to the bike, taking time to enjoy the scenery. Looking down in front of me I saw something small trading down in the snow.
I slowly went down to examine what it was, and as soon as I did I was pushed back as it pounced on me. I laughed as a small puppy licked at my face, it's tail wagging fast behind it. Rei floated down next to me. "Do you think it has a owner?" He asked, looking at the small animal. I hummed and examined it.
The pup didn't seem very cold at all, which means it hasn't been outside very long. "Yes, most likely." I answered. I sat up and held the animal close. Sitting in this snow wasn't my cup of tea. I held a hand over my mouth as I coughed for a bit, shivers going down my spine. Rei floated off to grab my bag that had my water in it. After he came back and I drank it I stoped coughing, but my throat still hurt.
Standing up I felt cold, I hadn't really realized till now, or I hadn't thought about it. Me and Rei turned to a small girl running near us waving. Once she got closer she explained, "I'm so glad he's safe! This is my puppy Marley, thank you for keeping him warm!" She spoke with a wide smile to which I returned, carefully handing over her pup. After that she left and ran off into the blurry snow.
"Hey Rei, I'm sorry to be a downer. But I think we should head back. I'm not feeling to great." I spoke slowly, looking down. "Are you alright, you must be tired since you didn't get much sleep last night." He asked looking at me in concern. My chest fluttered again, with my unknown feeling.
My vision blurring as I slowly closed my eyes and smiled. Then, I passed out. The coldness consuming my tired body. Rei yelling my name was the last thing I heard before I fell out of the world.
