January 8

Calum decided that he didn't care anymore, about what Luke and Michael were thinking. It didn't matter how they treated him.

He was going to change his attitude.

And that was going to start by having a killer night, and enjoying himself at Winnie's birthday party.

He had no reason to mourn over something he never did wrong.

Calum decided that since the teddy bear was a little bit large, he wasn't going to put it in a bag or anything.

He put the bracelet in a box, and tied the box with ribbon around the bear's neck. She was going to love it.

Calum checked the time.

It was time to go.

He hoped that his black button up shirt and his nicest jeans would be nice enough. Winnie didn't say anything in the letter that mentioned fancy, but Calum figured he couldn't show up in a band t-shirt or ripped jeans.

Winnie's house was huge.

It was a mansion, honestly.

Cars were parked up and down the street, and there were people laughing in the front yard, and you could hear the music blasting from the inside.

What a typical party.

Calum made his way inside and searched for a familiar face.

He immediately spotted Ashton, standing alone, surprisingly.

He was leaning over the counter top, nodding his head along to the beat.

He was better than nothing.

Calum approached him and cleared his throat to catch his attention.

"Hey, Ashton."

Ashton turned around and gave Calum a smile. "Oh, hey."

"Do you know where Luke and Michael are?"

"I think they're somewhere in the backyard. I think Winnie may be there too." Ashton motioned towards Calum's present.

"Thanks."

Calum weaved his way through all the hot girls, and all the drunk boys.

Luke and Michael were indeed in the backyard, and so was Winnie.

Luckily, Winnie was standing alone, drinking something.

Calum shyly approached her. "Hey, Winnie."

Winnie turned around and gave Calum a small smile. "Hi, Calum, right?"

Calum tried his best not to frown. She had to remember him. He was her damn partner in Creative Writing! Calum nodded instead. "Yeah. This is for you. Happy birthday."

Winnie took the gift from Calum's hand. "Thank you so much!"

"No problem. Uh, great party?" Calum said, but it came out sounding like a question.

"Thanks." Winnie opened her mouth to say something else, but one of her hot friends grabbed her by the arm, pulling her away from Calum.

Calum stood there dumbfounded, but then someone grabbed him by the shoulders.

Calum spun around and was face-to-face with Luke and Michael.

"Hey bro!" Luke slapped him on the back.

Calum mustered a smile. "Hey. Ashton's inside if you're wondering."

Luke frowned. "I wasn't wondering. But okay."

Michael grinned at Calum. "Winnie seemed to really like your present."

Calum shrugged. "That's good."

"Thanks for getting us into the best party of the year!" Michael complimented Calum.

Calum shrugged again. "I'm just that slick." He winked.

Luke and Michael laughed loudly, and Calum felt a part of their group again.

That feeling didn't last long, however.

Ashton was making his way to the backyard, and waved to Luke.

Luke waved back, and Ashton joined their circle.

Ashton handed Calum a cup of what was most likely beer.

Calum took it, thinking that he wasn't going to drink it anyway.

"Cheers to a great party!" Ashton declared.

Everyone else hollered, so Calum did too, to blend in.

They raised their cup, and downed a shot.

It felt good.
