January 1

Calum needed to get his mind off things. That's why he was lurking outside at 5 in the morning when he usually was never up this early.

New Year's Eve was a disaster. Luke and Michael had come over to his house, but brought a friend with them. Of course Calum's parents didn't mind, but Calum definitely minded.

His name was Ashton. He was an annoying, not bad-looking boy their age, who had moved in next to door to Luke. (Luke lived two blocks away).

Luke and Michael were all over him, so Calum felt forgotten.

And that's basically the short explanation of why he was outside at 5 in the morning.

There was a trail next to his house, so he chose to walk on that.

He had to go back to school tomorrow, and he needed to be prepared.

As Calum softly whistled, the breeze ticked his cheeks a nice pink.

He shoved his hands down his pockets to avoid freezing them off.

The giant oak trees towered above him, and the old snow crunched beneath his feet, making a nice sound.

Suddenly, he spotted a bench.

He had been on the bench before, that's not what shocked him.

It's that there was someone else there, up this early on a cold day, just staring out into space.

This girl smiled faintly at the scenery in front of her, her white beanie covering the top of her dark brown hair.

He sat down next to her, and she didn't even glance at him.

Calum felt a bit nervous now, as he licked his slightly chapped lips.

"Uh, hello." He said.

The girl slowly turned towards him, her icy blue eyes staring into his deep brown ones. "Hi," She said simply, waiting for Calum's response.

"I'm Calum," He reached his hand in front of him for her to shake.

The girl gave him a pretty smile, but didn't shake his hand.

Calum awkwardly pulled his hand back as fast as possible.

"I'm Ella."

"Just Ella?"

"Well, you're just Calum." She shrugged, still looking into his eyes.

"I'm Calum Thomas Hood," He said, running his tongue over his teeth.

She nods. "I'm Ella Aspen."

"Wow, your last names Aspen? What's your middle name?"

An odd expression pulled over Ella's face, as she answered, "Aspen is my middle name. I'd rather not talk about my last name. Goodbye Calum." Ella stood up to leave.

Calum stood up too, confused. "See you later?"

"Maybe."
