January 13

Calum was woken up by the sound of his phone ringing.

He mumbled and groggily sat up to answer his phone. "Mhm." He said.

The other person on the line laughed. "Calum? Sorry, did I wake you up?"

"Who's this?" Calum asked, rubbing his eyes, trying to get the sleepiness to go away.

"It's Ashton."

Calum frowned. "What do you want?"

"Uh, sorry. Should I just, like, call back, when you're ready to get out of bed?" Ashton stammered, taken aback my Calum's harsh tone.

Calum sighed. "No, man. Sorry. I'm just not really a morning person." He said.

And not much of an Ashton person either. He thought.

Ashton let out a nervous chuckle. "Uh, yeah, uh, me neither."

"So, why did you call me?"

"You're friends with Ella, right?"

"Yeah."

"You're going to her ski trip tomorrow, right?"

"I am."

"Did you happen to invite Winnie?"

Calum blushed at the mention of her name. "Uh, why?"

"She texted me this morning, telling me she was excited for something coming up really soon."

Calum bit his lip. Winnie never texted him. In fact, she hadn't even texted or called Calum once. "Oh."

"Yeah, she wouldn't tell me what it was."

"Ella and Winnie aren't even really friends. Why would you figure that Winnie was talking about the ski trip?"

Ashton mumbled something inaudible to Calum.

"What?"

"I gotta go, man. Something came up." Ashton hung up the phone.

Calum scrunched his eyebrows together. Talking to Ashton first thing in the morning wasn't exactly something he enjoyed doing. It better not happen again.

Calum dragged himself out of bed and got dressed quickly, heading downstairs.

"Hey mum." He greeted.

His mother was sitting at the table, eating a plate of pancakes. Across from her, were a plate of pancakes for Calum.

Calum's mother smiled up at him. "Calum! I'm really glad we're able to have breakfast together, after so many breakfasts alone."

Calum smiled, digging in to the delicious pancakes. His mum was an amazing cook.

"So, how's school?"

Calum shrugged, mouth full of food. He swallowed and replied to her, "It's good."

"That's good. Have you dissected anything in biology?"

"Uh, no."

"I heard the bio class dissected a sea animal sometime last week?"

Calum shook his head. "Oh, it was just a uh, oyster."

Joy, Calum's mum, frowned, but then laughed. "An oyster?"

"They were uh, just getting us warmed up." He muttered.

She nodded, buying into his story.

Calum was scared to tell his mum that he switched out of biology to be in Creative Writing.

Joy knew that Calum would like to be some kind of a journalist, but she always believed that his first job choice was to do something in the medical or science field. Even though she knew that his second choice was a journalist, she still didn't really approve. She thought that because his first choice was to become a biologist, he wouldn't have to go to Plan B.

"You are not going to become a journalist, Calum." Joy said sternly, scrubbing the dishes in the sink.

"Why not?" Calum asked.

"It isn't a good, stable job. Many journalists are completely unknown. Therefore, their pay is terrible. Even known journalists may make less than a biologist. Or a doctor."

Calum sighed. "It's uh, just my backup plan."

"In case you don't want to be a biologist?" Joy said firmly, the tone in her voice clearly ashamed of Calum.

Calum didn't like making his mum mad or sad. All he wanted was for her to be happy. Then he would be happy. His mum was his whole world, basically.

"Uh, yeah." He mumbled. "But don't worry. I don't really think I'll need a Plan B."

His mum smiled, and gave Calum a hug. "I just want the best for you." She said sweetly.

"Calum." Calum's mother repeated herself.

Calum snapped out of his flashback, muttering a sorry.

"I was asking if you had plans for the weekend?"

"Oh, yeah, I do, actually."

"With Luke and Michael?"

Calum's heart dropped into the pits of his stomach at the mention of Luke and Michael's names. "Uh, no."

"Oh?"

"With Ella and Winnie." Calum said. "And Ashton. Ashton's a guy." Calum added, in case his mum thought that it was weird and suspicious for her son to be hanging out with two girls.

Joy nodded, smiling. "That's nice. What for? What are you guys doing?"

"We're going up to the mountains to ski for Ella's birthday." Calum said.

"That's nice."

"Yeah."

"Well, I've got to go, now."

"Okay, bye mum. Love you."

"I love you too, Calum." She said, walking out of the door, without giving Calum a hug like she always has.
