Jake

"JAKE!" My mom's voice rang out in the silence. Why can I hear her but not see her? Oh right. Better open my eyes. "Jake!" She gasped in relief. I smiled. "Hey mom." "Jake I was so worried about you how could you do something like that?" She started tearing up. "I'm sorry," I said, genuinely meaning it. "I-I guess-" "Have you done this before?" She cried, gently tugging at my wrists. "I..yes." I sighed. I can't lie to her, not after she's worried so much. It seems, in her eyes, I proved my point. She doesn't understand all of it. She doesn't need to. "Jake, Jake, Jake," she wept, smiling sadly. "If only you knew just how much you mean to me." I feel so guilty. She kissed the top of my head. "Get some sleep Ernie," she said, using my old nickname given to me after my favourite childhood TV character. "Love you sweetie." I lay back down, sinking gladly into the quiet of sleep.

Loud noises. Wind. Movement. All of this I note with my eyes shut tight, drifting in and out of consciousness as I take in fragments of conversation. "Critical condition... Specialist hospital...Tell his mother...Load the 'copter..." My bed jolts and my eyes shoot open. As I tried to get up, a paramedic pushes me back down gently. "You need to stay still," she warns. "Don't let those open again." I look down at my wrists and curse silently. They're bleeding badly through the hasty stitches. "Only temporary," another paramedic adds. "When we get to the next hospital they'll fix you up. Oh," he says at my surprise. "Your wounds split while you were sleeping. You've lost a lot of blood." Oh shit. The sight of the blood and badly done stitches is enough to make me dead faint.
